Hulu’s new show "Maggie" depicts the difficulties of looking for love in your 20s, but with a twist - what happens if you're a psychic. Actor Leonardo Nam joined Cheddar News to talk about his character Dave, a friend of psychic Maggie. Nam said he hopes viewers come out "feeling hopeful for the present day."

'Maggie' Star Leonardo Nam Talks Role in Psychic Comedy

Welcome back to Between Bells and new hulu series, following title character Maggie as she juggles the Los Angeles dating scene and her life in between. However, she's got a leg up when it comes to her day to day since she has psychic abilities. The ensemble comedy about relationships, stars Rebecca Rittenhouse and our next guest take a look. I'm just grateful that she didn't pick a complete stranger. I wouldn't put it past her look on craigslist. For someone what, sorry? Sorry, I should explain. She walked in on me on my laptop and got worried because she saw me getting something from another person that I can't get from her. Right? Another person like a woman, women, men, my cousin, your cousin. I'll take that. Thanks. Oh Pisa softy, That's actor Leonardo Nam. Welcome to the show. So season one, just hulu earlier this week, it's getting great reviews and I've also seen a ton of publicity about this, the story trope of a group of friends navigating their lives. It really never gets old. So how would you describe Maggie for those who haven't seen it yet? Um Well, hey, thanks for having me on this show. I'd say I described this show as um about anyone that's really looking for love. Uh and really the what I think the story that they're trying to tell is um we're hoping that everyone comes out of this experience of watching this show is feeling hopeful for the present day for their friends for their loved ones um for their family and have a good time while watching it. Um Ben and then everyone in this cast is fantastic. Rebecca is hilarious. Um the whole cost hilarious. Uh so people have a good time watching it. I think it sounds like exactly what everyone needs during a time. Like this is just more hope, more joy and you play a cheerful and free spirited character named Dave, You mentioned in a recent article that the creators had a clear vision for your role. Can you just elaborate a little bit more on that? Yeah. You know, when they first, when I first started to collaborate with them, uh they were very clear about the fact that they wanted uh an actor to play Dave. That not only would go into the depths of depths of, you know, really touching and sweet moment, but then would also be able to bring a lot of levity to the role. I mean it is a comedy after all. Uh and so once we started to kind of dig in together the role of Dave started to become clearer and clearer to me and I'm just so thrilled to be part of a part of this show, I don't want to jump ahead too much because it's just the first week of this being released, but because it's getting such great reviews out there, can you share anything about hopes for a second season and where you'd like to see your character go from this first season. Well, you know, we were just at a screening yesterday with a bunch of people and um you know, it plays so well uh to to, to a group and you know, who knows about season two? Everyone's hopeful. We've got such a wonderful cast of characters not only in front of the character in front of the camera but behind as well. Uh and then season two, you know, I'd love to see where they go with with a baby, you know, my my character plays the foil essentially to Rebecca's role to Maggie, where she's looking for love elsewhere, always in hopes of bumping into someone. And I'm in a very solid, very unusual but very solid relationship. Um so I'd love to see what happens, you know, with that, you know, I myself two are married and have kids and I'd love to see where, you know, what would happen there. Comedy Gold in that. Very cool. So if it gets renewed for the second season, we got to have you back. But I also want to ask you, you have an extensive career with a lot of range when it comes to roles. I'm a fan of Westworld, you also start as a Felix lots on the award winning HBO series, which is a very different tone from Maggie. So I've I've got a note like where as an actor do you like to go, is it kind of no holds barred when you see another role or is there a certain genre or a niche that you really enjoy occupying? Now that you've had a taste of these different sides of the spectrum. Oh, great question. I um you know, honestly it's really all about the character and about, you know, whether it's, I feel like there is something that I can really sink my teeth into. Uh and then the show like Westworld where they're asking questions about the evolution of sin and about, you know, humanity. Um I really, really enjoyed delving into that, but really coming out with a lighthearted comedy like Maggie now, it was so fun to play and like you were saying, I think right now it's something that's very needed out there. And so I really enjoy riding this wave. My first film that I ever did was a movie called The Perfect Score and that was a comedy. And so it's really nice to kind of go back to uh to kind of work in that space again. Um I had another glimpse of doing a little movie before called Happy Anniversary and that was another like lighthearted film full of improv with bench warts and capable and and that was so fun to do. And I did that maybe about two years ago. And so now going back into this comedy genre is really exciting for me. Well, something else we need more of when it comes to light hearted and just like joy, warm, fuzzy feelings. Uh sisterhood of the traveling pants, which you've also started before and we've heard, you know, some rumblings from some of the franchise cast members that there could be another movie on the way, anything you can share. Are you into it, are you ready to jump back in? Oh, I'm super into it. I love bryan McBrien um and I love everyone on on that series as well. I would love to see what happens in the next, the next version of Sister to the traveling pants. I do know that I am so grateful for the fans of system of the traveling pants everywhere I go, I'll hear like bryan McBrien, so like Die Hard and I love that. Um and so yeah, I'd love to see what happens in that, you know, I do know that in the other books that have come out since, or the other book that's come out since my character takes a really interesting role. So I'd love I'd love to make that happen. Okay, well it sounds like there's a lot of exciting stuff potentially on the horizon, but appreciate you stopping by chatter. That's accurate, Leonardo.
