Lewis Black Dishes on New Stand-Up Comedy Special

Without uh spoiling too much or teasing too much. What can fans expect from this special? Um Well, it's, they can expect it's on youtube and it's free. So that's even, you know, you so even if it, it's something you don't like, it didn't cost anything, which is always a big break, fair enough. But it's really, uh it's really about um uh how inept I was in terms of dealing with pandemic. That's exactly what it's about and it kind of book ends, the, the other uh special that I did, which is now on uh on um Amazon Prime for free. Uh And that one took, we shot that the night, uh the, the last show pretty much, uh one of the last shows in America live shows and then uh before the, before the shutdown and this one takes up afterwards when I finally come out. Perfect. Perfect. By the way, I think we were all in that to deal with the pandemic if I'm being honest. So in the special, you explore topics like the pandemic like you mentioned and your frustrations with America and the world itself. Can you give us an example of something about the world that irritates you, that you talk about in your special. Well, I mean, in a way what I'm talking about is the fact that I always thought that, uh, you know, the, you know, the, if, if aliens invaded the planet that we would all come together as 11 planet and as one people and fight the alien and this was an alien in invading the planet and hey, we didn't. So that was a big, that was a big disappointment from the time of childhood on, I thought we would do that. But not last time you were here, we also asked you if you would ever be interested in hosting the Daily Show. And now you've been a contributor on the show for 27 years. Now, you're set to take the reins as guest host for the week of June 20th. So, are you excited? And can you tease what you have planned? I would love to uh think that it's gonna happen. But we've got that writers' strike now. I mean, it's just, it's so it's people go. Where did your sense of humor come from? It came from the fact that they finally, after 27 years are gonna let me sit in the, the Daily Show seat. And what happens? There's a writers' strike and I'm a writer. So it's not like I can about the writers. I understand totally why there's a strike. And, but if I could tease. What I'm gonna talk about is, uh, you know, I'm, I'm gonna talk about things like, I hope the, the National Comedy Center, which I'm involved in, into that to give people an idea of some place fun to go out of all of this nonsense we're going through. And, uh, and I'll also talk about the fact that the last thing we should be doing is banning books. Happy go lucky comedy. Yeah, totally. So, like many other shows, right? Because of the writer strike, like you mentioned, the Daily Show is currently not airing any new episodes because of it. Uh So if this extends, you won't be able to host. But what are your thoughts on the actual strike? I think it had to happen of the deal. The deal that was made last time was not a great deal. I mean, and it didn't really, you know, it's tough to figure out what technology is gonna do now. We're dealing with the problem of, uh, artificial intelligence and, and of course, what do you think, how, how happy would it be for a studio not have to pay writers? So, as it was, they were already making the writers room smaller and, um, they weren't paying more to the, to less people. They were just, you know, paying them the same amount and getting rid of writers. And, uh, uh I've been in writers rooms before and, uh, uh, and you, you know, it's huge because it's, it, it's important that, you know, you, you have the amount of people that you need to, to get the show on and the way you want it to get on. And so we'll see, I mean, I know something I can tell. I, I've yelled it all the time since I've been on the daily show. People kind of credited all sorts of people on that show and the people that really deserve just as much credit if not more than anybody, including the hosts or the writer. Well, Lewis, last time you were here, you also talked about inside out too. The movie releases, June 14th of next year and you're reprising your role as Anger. So tell me, are you finished recording your part of the film? Um And do you think it's gonna be just as good as the first Inside Out, which I am a huge fan of? Well, thank you. Uh I think it, it has the possibility. It's gonna be tough to top the surprise. I think that, that, that, that a piece of animation had because of what it was about. First time that uh you know, we, we talked about emotions uh separated them, there are new emotions coming, I can't uh reveal them but, but I will tell you this, uh people are gonna get a big kick out of those emotions if he's playing those emotions. And uh I think that I think that the story is fairly solid. They, uh, we, we had, I had, I've done two recording sessions. They're probably more to come but, uh, they've started to do the animation. I know. So, uh, hopefully, I mean, they're out of the writing process and can do the animation and, uh, I'm really looking forward to seeing, uh, how the, the storyline is really interesting and, uh, uh, I wasn't sure they could do an, uh, an inside out too but I think they've come up with a way, uh, to keep the story going and I, I, and I hope folks enjoy it.
