Instagram Software Engineer Thomas Dimson tells Cheddar's Hope King how he is using machine learning to develop new tools on the social media platform. Dimson says machine learning is about estimating confidence of different outcomes. Machines are able to improve through signals enabled through what Dimson describes as "training algorithms." Dimson says ironically, a lot of humans are involved in machine learning. One way Instagram is using this technology is through "deep text" to fight spam. Dimson says its a myth to think humans are out of the equation for machine learning, at least for the next twenty to thirty years. Instagram's parent company, Facebook, reports earnings on Wednesday after the closing bell.
