Supreme Court said, thursday americans have the right to carry a handgun outside the home for self defense and that striking down a new york law that required a special need for a permit. The ruling puts similar laws in five other states now at risk. The Second Amendment justice Justice Clarence thomas wrote for the majority quote, protects an individual's right to carry a handgun for self defense outside the home. The decision has far reaching implications. That comes as mass shootings have renewed the debate over gun control. The vote in the Supreme Court was 6-3 with the courts, three liberal members dissenting New York Governor Kathy Huckle calling the ruling quote, shocking. Meanwhile, the world of politics waking up this morning, our aerial Hickson is live in our nation's capital, bringing us a closer look at this opinion on gun rights. Good morning, Ariel, good morning baker and Hannah. Now the Supreme Court has struck down a new york law, as you mentioned, restricting who can carry a firearm in public, so we have to break it all down the court in a 6 to 3 decision with conservatives in the majority and liberals dissenting ruled that a new york law requiring people to prove they have a special need for self defense before getting a concealed carry license violated the Second Amendment. The holding endangers laws and up to seven other states, including California hawaii Maryland massachusetts and New Jersey Justice Clarence thomas writing for the majority said quote, because the state of new york issues public carry licenses only when an applicant demonstrates a special need for self defense, we conclude that the state's licensing regime violates the constitution. Supreme Court decisions in 2000 and eight and 2010 authorized the right for people to have a gun at home for self defense. This time around, though, the court was deciding on the right to carry a gun outside of the home, according to the Giffords Law Center to prevent gun violence, 25 states generally allow people to carry concealed weapons in most public spaces without any permit background check or safety training. This decision marks the most dramatic expansion of gun rights since those cases in over a decade, were still awaiting decisions on in cases on immigration, climate change regulation and of course abortion from the High Court, we could see those as soon as today. Well, aerial sticking with guns. What's the latest on the bipartisan gun safety bill in Congress? Well, the Senate passed the bill just last night with 65 to 33 with 15 republicans joining all democrats in voting for passage. It now heads over to the House where it's expected to pass and that vote should happen in the early to middle part of the day today, since lawmakers are eager to get home to start the july 4th recess. And once that happens it will head to President biden's desk for signature and we will officially have the most significant federal gun law since the nineties on the books.
