Let's get to your need to know headlines first this morning and our nation sits in shock once more that after at least 19 Children and two adults, including the gunman shot and killed in Texas on Tuesday afternoon, the shooting happened at an elementary school 85 miles west of San Antonio. The alleged shooter was also killed by responding officers there. That's according to the Governor Greg Abbott. Now this is the deadliest school shooting since the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre in Newtown Connecticut right now, it's unclear what the suspect motive was. So joining us now to talk more about this horrific shooting is Professor Kirk Burkhalter of the new york law school and former NYPD detective Sir. Such a pleasure to have you here with us this morning. The shooter is now dead, but we would like to know about the police response to the scene. What's your sort of thoughts here? Certainly. So at this point, the police are still trying to determine the motive for the shooting and whether there were any accomplices or this person had any assistance. So as far as the motive is concerned, the police are combing through all types of physical rather forensic evidence that was recovered at the scene. They will be sweeping all of his social media accounts and posts and related um, internet activity And questioning neighbors, friends, relatives, acquaintances to in an attempt to determine if there was any motive. You know, this is so close to the shooting that occurred in buffalo 10 days ago and it mirrored some aspects of the shooting. Certainly mirror what occurred there. An important point. It would be for law enforcement to determine if this in any way, was a copycat action or was it planned before, actually before the buffalo shooting, which it may have. Yeah. And some families obviously still searching for their Children following the shooting as not all of them have been accounted for just yet. What's the typical process there? How long potentially could it take to locate some of these missing kids here? So, this is really an unfortunate aspect of the story. We know that law enforcement is collecting DNA samples from family members and in an attempt to still identify the Children. So, you know, there are many factors, uh, the, the amount of damage that was done to the victims being able to locate relatives than being in the condition to identify bodies. I would suspect that we should have a full accounting of those who were present, whether they survived or passed away within the next day or two. All right, turning now to some of our other top stories today marks the second anniversary of the death of George Floyd. He died at the hands of Minneapolis police after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground outside a convenience store. President biden is expected to issue an executive order today aimed at reforming federal policing. The order will direct federal agencies to revise their use of force policies and create a national registry of officers fired for misconduct. The order will also encourage police to tighten restrictions on choke holds and no knock warrants and restrict the transfer of most military equipment to law enforcement agencies. Congress failed to pass a police reform bill last year, George Floyd's family is expected to attend the signing of the order. Meanwhile, the CDC now issuing a Level two travel warning that it's monkeypox continues to spread. 16 countries including the U. S. Now have reported cases. The disease typically impacts several travelers every year, but this is now the largest person to person transmission ever seen. While the CDC has issued a monkey pox notice, the agency said the risk still to the general public is still low and forecasters at N. O. A. S. Climate prediction center, a division of the National Weather Service are predicting above average hurricane activity this year. Here to tell us more about what we can expect. You know, unfortunately, hurricane season officially begins june 1st water temperatures are already higher than average and there's a troubling current in the gulf that has some experts predicting the worst. Here's what you should know that troubling current in the gulf is what's known as a loop current. It's the area of warm water that travels from the caribbean further into the gulf of Mexico. Historically. When it reaches the gulf this early, we've been in for a rough hurricane season. This hurricane season might show us shades of hurricane seasons past according to a hurricane activity forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, We should expect 14-21 named storms with winds 39 mph or higher, As well as 3-6 major hurricanes, making this the seventh consecutive above average hurricane season. So how does the loop current make for a rougher hurricane season? Well, the storm can gain strength as it draws energy from water warmer than 78°, potentially upgrading a tropical storm to a powerful hurricane. What has experts alarmed now is that this year's loop current looks very similar to that of 2005. The year Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans of the 27 names storms that year seven became hurricanes Wilma and Rita also crossed the loop current and gained strength in 2005. They would go on to become two of the most intense atlantic hurricanes on record. Hurricane season ends November 30, but storms have formed past that time, especially in recent years
