Nat and Alex Wolff Dish On New Album, 'Table for Two'

Alex. It's so good to have both of you guys here with us, Alex. I want to start with you. The new album with you guys Table for two was released today. It's your first studio album since 2011. So how does it feel for the album to finally be out and available for the world to now hear it? It's amazing. I mean, we, well, we, we had an album public places years ago in like 2016 and I E P. So it was, it was an E P. It was, it was like a seven song thing, but we haven't had, I mean, there's so many songs on this when I was scrolling through it like 16 songs. So there's 80 there's 80 songs. It's crazy though. It feels like it feels really surreal. There's a lot of also little notifications going on on this computer. I'm sorry this morning. Uh Nat, the album is said to embody sort of a new era of music for you guys with more of a mature and new sound. So talk a little bit more about the vibe of this record and how it's sort of an evolution of music from what you've previously released in the past. Well, Alex and I hadn't been living in the same place since we were, you know, were teenagers. And then during lockdown, we were in a house with Alex, his girlfriend, me and my ex-girlfriend, our friend Austin. We were just all in this house together and we started making music in the same way that we did when we were kids and there was something, um, and we had just, we had grown a lot and we had all of these songs and then we spent months and months in the lockdown just perfecting the songs and working on them and, uh, you know, showing each other songs and having notes on them. And then, uh, and then we went into the studio and we did the album in 11 days and it was just the two of us and we run back and forth, you know, between Alex playing bass and you playing guitar, Alex playing guitar, me playing piano, Alex playing drums, me playing drums, me playing, actually, I didn't play drums on the album, but I did play drums last night at the show and he did a great job. Um, but it really is, uh, it's the kind of, it's the, it's, it's music that, you know, first whenever I get a song, um whenever I get to hear a song that Alex wrote, I just get so excited as a fan of Alex's songwriting and I hope he feels the same way. Yeah, 100%. What do you think? I think, uh, I, I think you definitely get excited when I write a song. But do you get excited about my song? I get so excited when you're so excited about my songs, you know about my song. It's just like, it's just an honor when you, someone that you respect as a man. I never, I didn't know this is gonna happen on news, but I quit the band. Uh We got an exclusive already on the show today. Wow, especially on the album release day. Um I do wanna talk also about the added significance about this album. I mean, today is your mom's birthday, I believe, and she was the one who actually created the brothers band. So talk about the influence that your mom has had on you and why that was sort of significant to have this release come out today just turned 29 which is amazing because she's only 29 years old. I'm only 28. So it's really crazy. Yeah. Um Those are tough, you know. So I, I, I, I feel like this album has a lot of our, you know, in a weird way. It feels like a huge elemental step forward and then also, it feels like a throwback to when we were, we were kids because there was something so familial obviously about being in, in, in lockdown together. And um you know, there's, there's a, uh my, you know, my mom has just been such a, a huge inspiration to us artistically and, and she's such a big fan of the music. And so it felt like a really exciting thing to do. And then also my dad plays piano on the album. And one of the most beautiful moments for making the album was when we did my song, um all my plans in parentheses. Shake. Um We brought, um, my dad in to play uh uh a piano solo before the song starts because it's a song that I wrote about his struggle with cancer and my, um, my struggle with, with, with him getting to the point where we thought he was gonna die and then he ended up making a full recovery. And, um, so that song sort of covered that period of time. So I thought it would be nice if I brought, um dad to play on it. And then he came in, he, he had listened to the song, we never heard the lyrics really couldn't hear what they were about. And then he read them on a piece of paper and he started crying and, you know, it's like the dads don't cry like that's not the thing that dads do. Um My dad didn't know. Hey, yeah, cool. Does it? So he started crying and it was really intense and then he said, OK, put me in the booth and he went and played it and we, then we were all sobbing and you know, my mom was there, we were all just crying and it was this beautiful family moment where through art, we kind of reconnected and, and worked through this painful period. Wow, that's an incredible story. And I do also just want to quickly shift gears about the acting careers for both of you, Alex. You have a supporting role in Christopher Nolan's upcoming movie Oppenheimer that releases in July. We know Christopher Nolan movies are highly secretive but is there any bombs? Maybe you could tell us about being part of this star stud cast? And what was, what was the shooting experience like? Um Yeah, super secretive. I mean, I, I haven't seen it yet. There's not that much I can share but, but uh he directed it and he did an amazing job. I know I, what a scoop, I love it. Uh What it was amazing. This is gonna be the headline of this interview, by the way.
