May 20th is National Rescue Dog Day and comes when thousands of dogs and other pets are without a home. ASPCA Senior Manager Adi Hovav joined Cheddar News along with Twister the Pitbull to talk more about adopting a pet and some of its benefits.

good friday morning friends Welcome back to wake up with cheddar and it's time now for your morning tea. Just a few quick sips to fill your cup for the day. Now guys today National Rescue Dog day and we know here at cheddar we absolutely love our furry friends right now we are living obviously in a time where thousands of dogs are without homes and shelter Shannon are becoming much more overcrowded. Yeah but there is something that you can do and it's easier than you may think you can adopt a furry friend like this little twister right here. So joining us to talk all about how you can adopt and why you should consider it are two very special guests. Yes indeed. So we have a d have a senior manager of behavior over a S. P. C. A adoption center and this is our new little friend right over here. This is twister, he's a little nervous, clearly it looks like he's laying down over here. Yes I did. There's twister and it's such a pleasure to have you here. So obviously I know I'm stating a very obvious factor as somebody who has a rescue dog but why is it so important for people to rescue? You know it's so important for people to rescue because there's so many dogs in shelters that need a home and a lots of dogs that are bigger or older like twister who are overlooked and are actually like really fantastic companion pets. He's in foster now and the foster has nothing but great things to say about him. Well you know a lot of people during the pandemic, they actually adopted dogs and there was a big spike and people adopting. But now a lot of people are starting to give those dogs back. So can you talk about the pandemic spike affected your organization? Yeah. We actually looked into whether people were returning and so further research shows that they are keeping their pets, which is awesome. Yeah. But that doesn't mean there are still lots of animals in need. Right? So the impact on us is that we're seeing in cats and dogs that are a little more complicated and need a little more. So we're really focused on those populations, those overlooked animals. And just to help them shine and show people what wonderful pets. And we're showing quite a few of the pets available. There are some of the cats were just showing you some of the dogs just a moment ago. You know, for those of it. Maybe we're on the fence about adopting, Let's talk about the benefits of it because there are so many, there are so many benefits. I mean for everyone who owns who has a cat or a dog, You know what companionship they bring to you and what joy, especially during this time when there's lots of anxiety. People have really saw lots of comfort in pets. Yeah. What do you think are a few things people should consider before adopting a pet. Some of the things they consider are just what their household looks like their family members making sure everyone's on board making sure that you've got a schedule and who's gonna walk and who's gonna groom and who's gonna feed. Um But the biggest thing you know I encourage people to do is just keep an open mind and an open heart because when you talk to shelter staff about what your expectations are you might be surprised to find that the perfect fit for you might not be what you expected. So just about twister really. How old is twister? So twisters? About eight. Um He's been with us since october. He actually unfortunately came in pretty emaciated. So he's very thin he had a skin conditions and some eye conditions So fast forward to now he's like having a whole new life he's living his best life for sure. He's a little older because we always think about the puppies. But yeah. Yeah. Yeah puppies are cute but there's so much benefit to adopting an older dog. And twister here is actually like the perfect combination of like get up and go and walk and couch potato by the way is the best twister we love.
