NBC to Bring Back the Golden Globes

You may remember the organization behind the Golden Globes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association came under fire as a series of articles revealed ethics concerns and a shocking lack of diversity among its 87 members, there was not a single black member of the organization Along with its supposed nonprofit status while allowing members to receive gifts and large sums of money that led to heightened security. These accusations prompted hundreds of publicists and celebrities to boycott the golden globes and NBC decided not to air the awards show in 2022. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association made a series of changes in response banning members from accepting those gifts and adding 21 members, six of whom were black. H. F. D. A. Has reached out to publicists about the changes hoping to attract Hollywood's elite back to the typically star studded ceremony according to the Hollywood reporter, the Golden Globes will air Tuesday january 10th. Now, Hannah, we talked about this extensively in March of last year when this all went down and initially the target goal was 13 black members, only six have been added of those 21 new members. So I think you know where I stand when it comes to the numbers, it really seems like much more needs to be done. But NBC potentially still holding this award show in 2023. Although some sources say according to the Hollywood reporter, this was a prima, Okay, that's good to know, I do appreciate the transparency, but you're right. I think they have a long way to go by the way that date of january 10th. This is very strategic because the Globes as you know, AsIA have taken place on Sundays. But the first sunday in january is New Year's Day. The 2nd january eighth NFL regular season for sunday night Football. And then January 15 is a critics choice awards. So they're doing everything they possibly can to make sure they get viewers. The question is whether we tune in or not, I do wonder if publicist and celebrities will continue to boycott this, especially to your point. The numbers haven't exactly changed. Yes, they've improved, but not overwhelmingly. Yeah, definitely. And I also want to mention the fact that the origin story of the H. F. P. A is all about journalists who wanted diversity and inclusion, which adds even more fuel to this fire for them to get it right. So we'll continue to watch to definitely see how this turns out. Come january. Absolutely. And joining us now to talk all things Golden Globes is Erik Davis Managing Director over at Fandango. Erik, Welcome back. We always love talking to you. So even a few months ago reports seemed to indicate NBC wasn't interested in bringing back the Golden Globes. What happened here? Well, it seems like the Hollywood foreign press is, is trying to do everything they can to get back on that schedule. Uh they did not air a ceremony last year. They really wanna air a ceremony for early 2023. The Critics Choice Awards really kind of trying to come in there and and take that spot? It's a really great ceremony that the critics put on as well? I am a member of the Critics Choice Association. I do want to disclose that, but it is a really great ceremony too. And so I definitely think there's there's competition on that awards calendar and so, you know, the Hollywood Foreign press really is trying to do what they can to get back there because if we go a second year without the Golden globes, you know, maybe it's not as well known to the audience anymore. Maybe the audience begins to move on to some of these other shows. And there's a lot of awards season shows now. It's not just a guy Golden globes. Critics Choice Awards. It's sag, you know, it's the Oscars, it's the Independent Spirit Awards. And so there are a lot of awards shows vying for your attention. I think the good news heading into 2023 other films are going to be bigger. Um and there's going to be a lot more, I would say accessible general audience titles that are in the conversation beginning with the title that's out this week at home. And that's Elvis Yeah. Eric I have to get your barometer, your take on the temperature in Hollywood, especially as we're getting these rumors swirling about NBC picking up the award show again, come january kind of conflicting reports coming from the Hollywood Reporter. Where do you think NBC stands on the H. F. P. A. And how much progress has moved forward thus far? Yeah. You know, I I can't say I'm not part of NBC's conversations in terms of what they need to see from the Hollywood foreign press. It does definitely feel like it's a delicate situation. You know, I, I always think that, you know, there's, there's always more work to be done. Um, so I guess that they may have some agreements in place with the Hollywood foreign press that they need to see certain, certain advancements in in what they're doing in order to, to stage a show. But I can't tell you exactly what they're looking for or if they're missing something that they're waiting to see from the, from the H. F. P. A. I I do not have that information. I do know that in terms of Hollywood, you know, the Golden Globes expands the categories. They have more acting categories because they have that comedy and musical category. And so there's more of an opportunity for additional films to get in there. Additional talent to get in there. Maybe there are films that are on the bubble in terms of the Oscar conversation, but they slide in there in a musical or comedy fashion. And so that is what Hollywood likes about it. Um, And so in terms of the work that's being done that maybe between NBC and H. F. P. A. And I am not sure where that is at this moment in time and age. And I were discussing the date a moment ago. The Hollywood reporter says the globes will air on Tuesday, january 10th. The ceremony, like I mentioned, always takes place on sunday, but the report says there are multiple conflicts I mentioned a moment ago. How significant is this move? Well, it's interesting because the Emmys are on a monday this year too. So, you know, we're maybe these award shows, especially over the years. You know, ratings have have gone down. Maybe interest is winning a little bit when it comes to these big award shows. And so I think you need to shift some things around. I think you need to take it off of a sunday. Me's is gonna try monday. Try to use if it does wind up being the golden globes are on Tuesday and the critics choice awards are on that sunday, going to be the first giant week for Hollywood in 2023. That's gonna be a big week. There'll be a lot of stars in L. A. For the back to back ceremonies and it will be a significant week for Hollywood as we kick off the year. So curious to see if it, if it does remain that way. But yeah, like I said, Emmy's is on monday this year. So definitely gonna try it up and and see if if putting an award show like this during the week, changes the way that people connect with it, or changes viewership in any kind of way, but I think they need to change it up and and, and try out different days for sure. Yeah. Speaking of changes, you were talking about the expansion of categories, the opportunities for actors in particular, Do you expect any other changes from the standard ceremony that we've come to expect from this award show? Well, you know, it's always interesting because the golden globes is like the fun one, right? It's like the one where ever having dinner and having drinks, you know, we've seen off the cuff jokes and this is like the one that's a little bit looser and crazier, which is as a fan, is why I've always liked watching the Golden globes. I think NBC always does a really wonderful job putting together that ceremony uh and and airing it, it's always entertaining to watch. So we'll be curious to see, you know, um definitely, I think the changes that they've made should be part of the show and some in some fashion they should talk to the audience about it too. I'm sure the celebrities in the audience are, are gonna potentially say something about um about everything that's gone on too, so, you know, it should be interesting. I I definitely think enough has happened in the last um two years that audiences are gonna want to tune in and see what happens, you know, the golden globes, you never know what's gonna happen. I think this ceremony you're definitely never gonna know what's gonna happen and I hope they go get kiki palmer to host. You know, I think that I love her and especially after I've seen, nope, I love her even more. She's incredible.
