Well, the House last week passed the Respect for Marriage Act, an effort to protect same sex marriage in the wake of threats to the rights of those marriages from the Supreme Court. Now let's go into the bill here. It requires that the federal government recognize the validity of same sex marriages. It also says that states must recognize all marriages if they were legal in the state where they are performed. It also repeals that controversial defense of Marriage act, which was in 1996 law that defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman. A whopping 47 republicans joined all house democrats in voting for passage. The size of the bipartisan vote made senate democrats optimistic that they can find enough republican votes to get it passed. But so far, only five republican senators have shown that they will support that bill. Susan Collins of maine lisa murkowski of Alaska, rob, Portman of Ohio tom tales of north Carolina and surprisingly Ron johnson of Wisconsin That's only five so far. And Democrats will need five more or 10 Republicans to join them to break that filibuster and pass this bill. Wisconsin. Senator tammy baldwin, the first openly LGBT Q person elected to the Senate is working behind the scenes to try to get more republicans on board. But few senators are willing to take a public position in favor or against the bill. Democrats still have plenty of time to pass the bill before midterms but It's unclear if they'll get it in before the August recess. And meanwhile Ariel, there's some new reporting out last night showing the Justice Department is interested in President Trump's actions after the 2020 election. So what's the latest?
