CAPITOL FALLOUT
THE LATEST: In his first interview since the riots, the outgoing Capitol Police chief says House and Senate security officials denied his request to put the National Guard on standby ahead of the planned protests. Graphic video has surfaced showing rioters beating a police officer with an American flag on the steps of the Capitol (it’s unclear if it was Brian Sicknick, the officer who died). Sicknick’s family say they have spoken to the vice president and House speaker, but not the president. Another Capitol Police officer has died over the weekend, reportedly by suicide. ARRESTS: Dozens of people have now been arrested on federal charges in connection with the Capitol riots, including a West Virginia lawmaker, the man who was photographed with his feet up on Speaker Pelosi’s desk, the man who stole her lectern, the man known as the “QAnon Shaman” who was walking around shirtless in a headdress, and two men clad in military fatigues who were carrying zip-ties. IMPEACHMENT II
A small but growing number of Congressional Republicans are urging President Trump to resign. Assuming that doesn’t happen -- and the reporting suggests it’s unlikely -- House Democrats are opening up a two-pronged approach: the House will formally call on Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment today. If he doesn’t respond in 24 hours, the chamber will vote on articles of impeachment, possibly as early as tomorrow. The current consensus among Dems appears to be to hold off on sending the impeachment articles to the Senate for a trial until after President-elect Biden takes office, so that it doesn’t delay his early agenda. TWITTER BOOTS TRUMP
President Trump has now been kicked off virtually all mainstream social media platforms. He’s been permanently banned from Twitter, which also nuked many high-profile QAnon and far-right accounts in the wake of the Capitol riots. Many of those accounts flocked to Parler, which was then kicked off both the Apple and Google app stores. Amazon cut off Parler's hosting service, after one of President Trump’s associates used the service to call for the vice president’s execution. Parler says it removed that post. CNN
COVID-19: VACCINE LATEST
Florida’s biggest testing and vaccination site, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, will be closed today so it can host the College Football Playoff national championship game. NYC will start 24/7 vaccinations at five sites as the state has relaxed restrictions after some facilities had to toss expired doses. The Biden administration plans to release almost all available vaccine supply immediately on Jan. 20. rather than hold back second doses. The rollout is hitting snags abroad, too; governments across Europe are under fire for bottlenecks, shortages and slow starts. QUARTZ
LABOR MARKET SCREECHES TO HALT
The U.S. economy shed 140,000 jobs in December for the first monthly loss in eight months. According to government data, on a net basis women accounted for all of those lost jobs. For a brief period last year, women held more jobs than men in the overall economy. The pandemic destroyed those gains. The hardest-hit sectors of the economy -- education, hospitality and retail -- are female-dominated industries. The situation is even bleaker for women of color, who disproportionately work in those fields. THE CUT
CES 2021
The Consumer Electronics Show kicks off today as a virtual event. The annual trade show is often where the “next big thing” in tech is unveiled. This year, it’s all about software and services, from fitness apps to videoconferencing to smart TVs. Here’s a preview from CNET: READ IT
NFL PLAYOFFS
The Pittsburgh Steelers started the season 11-0 and got knocked out at home in the wild-card round, falling to the Cleveland Browns, 48-37. The Bills, Rams, Bucs, Ravens and Saints also advanced to the first round. ESPN
'SATC' COMEBACK
The rumors are true: HBO Max is rebooting Sex and the City. The 10-part limited series is titled And Just Like That… It will star Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis but, notably, not Kim Cattrall. Production starts in NYC in the spring. VARIETY

LEFTOVERS: AMERICAN HERO
It was Mr. Rogers who famously said that, when he was young and saw “scary things on TV,” his mother would say to him: “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Among the helpers last Wednesday was Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman. In one of the videos shot amid the chaos, Goodman, a Black officer who found himself alone with just a baton guarding the Senate chambers, strategically diverted the mob up a staircase -- where there were reinforcements -- and away from the room where lawmakers were sheltering. According to the journalist who shot the video, the chamber was secured just one minute after the rioters were baited by Goodman to go in the other direction. LAW & CRIME
