Here are the headlines you Need2Know for Tuesday, January 12, 2021:

DOMESTIC TERROR THREAT

The Pentagon authorized as many as 15,000 National Guard troops to deploy to Washington ahead of the inauguration on Jan. 20, and the FBI sent a bulletin to law enforcement across the country warning of the possibility of armed protests in all 50 state capitals this weekend and into next week. The Washington Monument will be closed through at least next week due to ongoing threats. Chad Wolf, the acting Homeland Security secretary who is in charge of protecting the inauguration, is the third Cabinet-level official to quit early, and two Capitol Police officers have been suspended for their actions during the riots. At least another dozen are under investigation. WASH POST

IMPEACHMENT PUSH

House Democrats introduced a single article of impeachment against President Trump for “inciting violence against the government of the United States.” The chamber will vote on impeaching the president tomorrow if Vice President Pence doesn’t move on the 25th Amendment today. That was always an unlikely outcome, but is now virtually dead after Pence met with Trump for the first time since the riots and had a “good conversation,” according to a senior administration official. COVID-19: LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Two congresswomen, Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman of N.J. and Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, have tested positive for the coronavirus. Coleman is in the hospital. Both Democrats say they think they caught the virus from other members of Congress who would not put on masks while they were sheltering at the Capitol. Meanwhile, more states are relaxing vaccine regulations to speed up the rollout. In California, Disneyland and Dodger Stadium will be turned into mass vaccination sites. Despite global vaccination campaigns, the world will not achieve herd immunity in 2021, according to the WHO’s chief scientist. DW

INDONESIAN PLANE CRASH

Rescuers believe they located the black box flight recorders from the Indonesian passenger jet that crashed into the ocean over the weekend with 62 people on board. Sriwijaya Air Flight 182, a Boeing 737-500, dropped off radar shortly after takeoff from Jakarta. A single, concentrated debris field suggests that the plane was intact when it hit the water. The 737-500 is a different model than the 737 Max. CNN

GOP LOSING BIG BIZ

A growing number of big businesses are pressing pause on their political donations following the Capitol riots. Morgan Stanley, Marriott, Dow Chemical, AT&T and Airbnb are among the firms saying they will cut ties with Republican lawmakers who voted against certifying the election results. Some others, like JPMorgan, Citi and Goldman Sachs, say they will temporarily stop donations to both Democrats and Republicans. Hallmark is asking for donations it gave to Sens. Josh Hawley and Roger Marshall to be sent back after those senators objected to the election certification. CHEDDAR

WHATSAPP PRIVACY

If you’re one of the two billion people in the world who uses WhatsApp, pay attention to the new privacy policy when it prompts you to accept. The upcoming change gives WhatsApp the right to share your data with the broader Facebook network, which includes Instagram, even if you don’t have Facebook or Instagram accounts. WhatsApp conversations remain encrypted, but other metadata -- such as your phone’s location, contact list or usage data -- will be shared with Facebook. BLOOMBERG

ROLL TIDE

Nick Saban now has the most college football championships of any head coach in history after Alabama steamrolled Ohio State, 52-24, to win its sixth national title since 2009. Heisman winner DeVonta Smith set seven records in just the first half before he dislocated his finger and had to sit. ESPN

'SATC' REVIVAL

Sarah Jessica Parker has responded to the biggest question in America: why isn't Kim Cattrall part of the upcoming Sex and the City revival coming to HBO Max? Parker replied to a fan who commented that she and Cattrall “dislike each other” by saying: “I don’t dislike her. I’ve never said that. Never would. Samantha isn’t part of this story. But she will always be part of us.” Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis will reportedly make $1 million per episode on the new series. VARIETY

LEFTOVERS: PARIS GLOW UP

Paris is reimagining the famed Champs-Élysées, with plans to turn the 1.2 mile thoroughfare known as “the most beautiful avenue in the world” into a greener, pedestrian-friendly plaza intended to cut down on traffic and pollution that’s clogged the boulevard and made it less attractive over the years. Paris has been among the most progressive big cities in the world when it comes to reimagining its streets, using the pandemic as an experiment to turn many streets and avenues over to pedestrians and cyclists. The Élysées refurbishment won’t start until after Paris hosts the 2024 Olympics. SEE RENDERING
