the highly anticipated hearings on the january 6th insurrection on the capitol kicked off last night. The bipartisan House panel laid out evidence that they say points to former president trump orchestrating a coupe that day stoking false claims. The election was stolen. One bombshell accusation the committee learned is that president trump voiced support when protesters demanded Vice president Pence be hanged. One of the two republicans on the panel, congresswoman Liz Cheney criticized her colleagues for maintaining their allegiance to the former president in our country. We don't swear an oath to an individual or a political party. We take our oath to defend the United States constitution and that oath must mean something tonight. I say this to my republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible. There will come a day when donald trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain. There are another five scheduled hearings to lay out further evidence surrounding that day. Now our own Ariel Hickson is live in Washington, D. C. To bring us more on what we saw in the january 6th committee hearing last night. Ariel Well, Chloe, as you mentioned at the top of the show, the committee for the first time laid out the findings of its nearly year long investigation into the attack on the capitol. In his opening statement, Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson put the blame for the violence that day. Squarely on president trump. Take a listen what you witnessed is what a coordinated and planned effort would look like It was the culmination of a months long effort spearheaded by president trump. We also heard committee Vice chair Liz Cheney admonished her fellow republicans for their roles in the lead up to the capitol attack. She revealed that several of them actually reached out to the trump White House in the weeks after january 6th to ask for presidential pardons because of all they had done to undermine the 2020 election. Cheney's statement stuck out to many of us here in D. C. But the most affecting testimony by far came from capitol police officer Caroline Edwards, the first officer to sustain injuries during the attack. Here she is describing the surrendering during the attack. What I saw was just a war scene. It was something like I had seen out of the movies. I couldn't believe my eyes, there were officers on the ground. Um you know they were bleeding, they were throwing up, they were, you know, they had, I mean I saw friends with blood all over their faces. These are just some of the key moments from what's truly a blockbuster hearing. It sounds like an aerial, Did we get a sense of what future hearings will look like. Yes, well Cheney used part of her statement to preview upcoming hearing, she said that each hearing will focus on one element of what she called the quote sophisticated seven part plan to overturn the election. In some other headlines we're following this morning, a workplace shooting in Maryland has left three people dead and one injured. Police say the 23 year old gunman opened fire on four of his co workers. He then fled the scene before getting in a shootout with a Maryland state trooper. Now both the suspect and the trooper were wounded from the exchange of bullets. The victims and suspects were employees of Columbia machine, which makes concrete products in Smithsburg. That's in western Maryland and the grand rapids. Michigan police officer involved in the fatal shooting of Patrick LaToya has been charged with second degree murder. Leroy, a 26 year old refugee from Congo was shot by officer Christopher share during a traffic stop on april 4th body cam video shows lawyer trying to run, followed by a brief struggle with an officer over a Taser passenger video from the man's car shows the officer on top of him before the officer reaches for his gun and fatally shoots him. Sure is currently in custody as he awaits trial and elsewhere, 17 pro golfers, including major championship winners Phil Mickelson and Dustin johnson have been suspended by the PGA tour for competing in the Saudi backed live golf event near London. The first day of play got underway on thursday Mickelson johnson and others have taken heat for aligning with the venture. Despite Saudi's government's past human rights abuses, including its involvement in the killing of a Washington post columnist. The suspensions are indefinite and Russian president Vladimir Putin likening himself to a famous czar, the Russian leader justifying his invasion of Ukraine by comparing his actions to former Russian monarch. Pierre the Great, In a town hall style meeting with Russian entrepreneurs. The Russian leader likened his war to Ukraine to Peter the Great's war with Sweden saying that Russia was simply returning and strengthening the conquered land, hinting that that's what he was now doing in Ukraine. And for the very first time, Nasa is going to study UFOs on thursday. The space agency said it will gather data on events in the sky that cannot be identified as aircraft or known natural phenomena. Nasa says it's interested in what it calls unidentified aerial phenomena or you a PS from a security and safety perspective, there is no evidence that these phenomena are extraterrestrial.
