IMPEACHMENT II

Donald Trump will become the first former president to stand trial in the Senate later today. House prosecutors plan to argue that Trump committed a “grievous constitutional crime” by inciting a deadly mob that attacked the Capitol. His defense lawyers will argue that the trial is unconstitutional, and that the former president had a First Amendment right to claim that the election was stolen and tell his supporters to “fight like hell.” Trump will not be in attendance, and no witnesses are expected to be called. Instead, the prosecution will rely heavily on video evidence from the transition period leading up to Jan. 6 to make their case. The trial starts at 1 p.m. ET and will last at least for the remainder of the week. Follow Cheddar’s live blog: HERE

COVID-19: LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Dr. Fauci continues to say that it’s imperative that people get both doses of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, disagreeing with some experts who have said it makes more sense for as many people as possible to get the first shot, then worry about the second later. Even though just one dose provides some significant immune response, the second dose is critical to suppressing the spread of the variants, according to Fauci. Meanwhile, with cases continuing to drop nationwide, some more restrictions are easing. In NYC, indoor dining will return on Friday, earlier than expected, and city middle schools will resume in-person class later this month. Texas Republican Rep. Ron Wright has passed away after contracting COVID-19, becoming the first sitting member of Congress to die of the virus. CBS NEWS

STIMULUS: MINIMUM WAGE

President Biden has acknowledged that Democrats’ proposal to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 may not make it into the final stimulus bill because of resistance from Republicans and some moderate Dems over its cost. Now we have a better idea of what that price tag is, thanks to an updated analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. The CBO estimates that a $15 minimum wage would cost about 1.4 million jobs over the next four years as it gets phased in, but would also deliver raises to 27 million Americans, 900,000 of whom would be lifted out of poverty. That analysis is likely to make it more difficult -- not less -- for Democrats to pass the proposal. ROLL CALL

GLACIER FLOOD DISASTER

Rescuers in northern India are still working to reach 37 power plant workers who have been trapped in a tunnel since a Himalayan glacier burst and unleashed a wall of water and debris on Sunday. At least 18 people have died and 140 are still missing in the disaster. YAHOO NEWS

TESLA <3 BITCOIN

If you own an index fund that tracks the S&P 500, you may now have some exposure to Bitcoin, whether you like it or not. Elon Musk disclosed that Tesla invested $1.5 billion in the volatile cryptocurrency and plans to start accepting it as a form of payment. That announcement sent Bitcoin soaring above the record highs it's been toying with for weeks, while the broader market closed at record highs, too, but for other reasons. CHEDDAR

MARS TRAFFIC JAM

It is about to get crowded -- at least relatively speaking -- on Mars. Three separate space rovers are set to visit the Red Planet this month, starting with the UAE’s “Hope” probe reaching orbit today. The Hope is the first-ever Arab space mission, timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the UAE’s unification. The Hope will stay in orbit around the planet for one Martian year (687 days); it will be followed by China’s Tianwen-1 tomorrow, which will orbit before attempting to touch down on the surface in May. Next week, NASA’s Perseverance rover shows up -- but it’s going right in for the landing, currently scheduled for the afternoon of Feb. 18. AP

SERENA ON THE HUNT

Serena Williams has heard everyone saying Tom Brady is the G.O.A.T. ... and she would like a word. Williams (a longtime admirer of Brady, for the record) is front and center at the Australian Open, where she’s chasing her 24th Grand Slam single’s title. Williams easily put away Laura Siegemund of Germany in the first round as she debuted a new one-legged Nike catsuit in an homage to late track star Florence Griffith Joyner. She plays in the second round this morning. BUZZFEED

LEFTOVERS: MEDICAL MIRACLE

A British teenager who has been in a coma since he was hit by a car last winter is slowly starting to regain consciousness, his family says. Joseph Flavill suffered a traumatic brain injury after the March 1 accident but has suddenly started showing small signs of recovery and can now hear his family and blink in response. Flavill went into the coma just as the coronavirus started spreading in the UK and has no idea about the pandemic or anything else that has happened in the last year. NBC NEWS
