ELECTORAL COLLEGE VOTE

CHOOSING SIDES: President Trump’s supporters in Congress will mount a final, longshot bid to overturn the results of the presidential election today. This is not the first time lawmakers from the opposing party have challenged election results -- Democrats did it twice in the last two decades --  but the scale and intensity of the challenge is unprecedented. A joint-session of Congress will gavel in at 1 p.m. ET for the pro forma task of counting the electoral college votes. Eleven Senate Republicans will join dozens of their colleagues in the House to object to some states’ votes, forcing a debate that could stretch into the night. At the same time, Trump is expected to address a rally of his supporters outside the White House. NY TIMES

STUCK IN THE MIDDLE: All eyes will be on Vice President Pence, who has to choose between his loyalty to the Constitution and his loyalty to President Trump. The VP, in his role as president of the Senate, is expected to preside over the counting of the votes and then formally name the winner of the election, Joe Biden. Pence does not have the authority to unilaterally reject electors, and he is said to have told the president that he can’t change the results. But how Pence handles today’s spectacle -- and the president’s reaction -- will be widely dissected. WASH POST

Dr. Fauci says he expects the pace of vaccinations to pick up momentum and hit 1 million per day soon. He also said the South African variant is likely already in the U.S., though it hasn’t been found yet. USA TODAY

KENOSHA NO CHARGES

The district attorney in Kenosha, Wis. will not charge the police officer who shot Jacob Blake in the back during a domestic disturbance call. That shooting led to protests and riots over the summer, coming in the midst of the nationwide unrest over the killing of George Floyd. The DA said the officer, Rusten Sheskey, acted justifiably when he shot Blake, who appeared to be reaching for something in his car, seven times, paralyzing him from the waist down. Blake had admitted to officers that he had a knife, according to police. JOURNAL SENTINEL

ATC THREAT

The FBI and FAA are investigating an apparent breach of the frequencies used by air traffic controllers. Multiple air traffic controllers in New York heard an audio message on Monday that said: "We are flying a plane into the Capitol on Wednesday. Soleimani will be avenged." That refers to Qassem Soleimani, the high-level Iranian general who was assassinated by the U.S. one year ago this week. Officials do not believe the threat is credible, but are investigating how the radio frequencies were breached. CBS NEWS
