New Book Helps Readers Navigate Business While Living Your Life

Welcome back to Between Bells everyone, whether you're entering the workforce looking to grow or even pivot careers. Our next guest is aiming to help offer ways to navigate these life changes in her new book facing the seduction of success inspiring stories on leading in business while living your life. Our next guest is taking her experiences and giving readers the advice they need joining us Now to talk about her new book is author, podcaster and entrepreneur jodi katz Jody, Welcome to the show. Why was it so important for you to take all different stages of your life and put it in a book? Well, I mean, I've been owning a business for 15 years and being an entrepreneur, it's a little lonely and I lived with so much self doubt in my head, not really sure how to move through and reach my goals and what happened is I create small goals for myself. So years ago was I want to be mentioned in women's wear daily, which at the time was the only publication that talked about the beauty business and then that happened and I got this little taste in my mouth that I wanted more, right and then more and I liken this to my relationship with sugar ready one cookie and then I need another one and another one. So, um this business journey and this ambitious journey is a seduction, right? It keeps calling to me, I'm sure and you know, a lot of your viewers careers are thinking about all these little wins that they get and then they want more and more and what does it take them to get more? Does that mean I send many more emails. Do I stay up later, Do I travel more? Do I network more? And then I really wanted to examine the tension between that and what about the other parts of my life that I love, right? My family, my kids having spontaneous adventures with them, fitness. I'm a super huge reality tv fan, like I love bravo reality tv shows. So these are all things that bring me joy and I didn't want to lose sight of those either. So it's that tension that I explore in the book. So what challenges did you face when you were giving the readers the necessary tools to navigate striking That success and of course the pursuit of success while balancing everything else that you love that you mentioned. Well, I've had over 200 podcast interviews with leaders in the beauty and wellness industry and all we talk about is career journey. We don't talk about products or product benefits or marketing, we only focus on career journey. So, the show is almost like a souped up linkedin, right? It brings to life, you know, these dynamic people beyond their resume And, you know, a huge challenge of writing this book is that we had over 200 interviews support through. So that's almost 200 hours of content to review. Um and I didn't do this alone. I worked with my co writer Jan Michele and she's been a writer with me for over a decade and she's a meticulous researcher Amazing. And it's perfect for this, this job with me and we went through all of these episodes and found really similar themes across all of these different guests, and these themes are always about life, work balance, quality of life, and mental health, and you're celebrating 200 episodes. Congratulations. That's quite defeated, especially in such a saturated space. What is some of the advice that sticks out to you from all the people that you interviewed in those podcasts? Well, there's so much great advice, but the ones that I'm thinking of today and I feel like the universe reminds me of these messages the days that I need them, Daniel Klein. She um worked as a very low level job at a very, very big global company and she was in a meeting where all the heads of the company, super people, big people that were always written about in the newspaper, um they were about to do something in the china market that she knew was gonna be a huge fail. She'd done work in china, she lived there and she knew that this was going to be a major disruption to their business. Does she speak up, right, when you're like almost intern level, raise your hand in front of these famous photographers and you know, famous business leaders and say something that they're not gonna want to hear? Oh, I do. I'm so intrigued. So are you hope? How are you hoping that readers reassess the definition of success to them? Well, I keep Changing my definition success. And I think giving myself permission to know that what I wanted when I was 20 or 25 or 30 is different than what I want now. So, um, my goal is joy. It's really quite simple, right? If my goal was money, I probably wouldn't be doing what I'm doing right now. But my goal is joy. I want to live joyfully. I want to feel fulfilled. I want to have flexibility in my life. And that's why I started my own business when I was working 15 years ago in corporate life. I looked around and I said, I can't be the mom, I want to be here and I wasn't even pregnant at the time, right? I just knew that this is what I wanted out of my life. And I wasn't gonna be able to find a job that gave me the flexibility that I needed. So I started my own business, right? So when I get into these moments where the seduction is really pulling me in, it's saying, do more, spend more time, do more feed me. I think about rooting myself in the purpose of starting my own business, which was to be more joyful and to have flexibility. A portion of the proceeds from your book will be donated to your favorite to charities tell us about that. Well, I'm on the board of girls helping girls period. It's not for profit that provides menstrual health products to people in need. And when you find out how much need there is, it's really astounding. So I'm super proud of that organization and love supporting them and then socks, which is the skin of color. Society is a collective of dermatologists who are educating dermatologists to understand different skin conditions on darker skin tones. Right? When um, I mean I didn't go to medical school, but I hang out with a lot of dermatologists in my day job and you know, a lot of the textbooks are on caucasian skin, so they're not going to be trained through medical school on how to see how conditions show up in darker skin tones. And that's the whole purpose of socks. We have about 30 seconds. But I want to ask you about an event you're doing with bravo star la la Kent to discuss the book.
