After being frustrated by how often his Apple watch needed to be recharged, the creator of Matrix Industries decided to make a watch of his own. As of this week, Matrix Industries is shipping out its first watch powered by the user's own body heat. Douglas Tham, CTO of Matrix Industries, joins Cheddar to explain how the PowerWatch harvests the energy of the wearer and turns it into electricity. This means the PowerWatch never needs to be charged. Also, when the watch is removed, the data is stored, and the watch goes into sleep mode until the user picks the watch up again. For now, Matrix Industries is excited about this micro use of harvesting energy. In the future, the company hopes to use their tech for more fitness and smart products and hopefully to power homes. It took Matrix five years to produce prototypes of their thermoelectric converter.
