NFL Star Ndamukong Suh Launches Financial Literacy Program for High Schoolers

Welcome back to closing bell and chatter news everyone and Damon Kang soo is a force on the football field and off of it, working to provide important resources for communities across the U. S. Focusing on education, health and wellness and empowerment. The NFL stars Foundation partnering with financial software company Intuit to provide high schoolers with desperately needed financial literacy resources, something not widely available in schools, especially those majority black and brown populations. So I'm joined now by NFL defensive tackle Ndamukong Sue, a co founder of the Su Family Foundation and Dave Zasada VP of corporate responsibility at Into it gentlemen, it's great to have you both on the show. Such an important topic of course, near and dear to my heart as well when it comes to financial literacy and so in Dominican, let's start with you, what is it about? Financial education that is so key in your eyes for young people to learn. It's simple, it's a tool that's gonna be with you in your life forever and earlier you can find out and start to learn that terminology of financial literacy. I think it's gonna be very important for you to be able to continue to grow and aspire to be whatever you want to be in the future. And so that's some of the main initiatives and focus is that we want to do with our partnership with into it was to provide these tools in these workshops for the for the youth and allowing them to understand what they're going to be uh embraced with and then be exposed to it as they grow up as young adults. Uh well said, and I think you're right, it's such a need for that these days. And certainly even I wish when I was growing up to some extent as well, Dave will bring you in of course you're joining from into it. Talk to me more about this partnership and why you did want to partner with the Sioux Foundation on this topic. Yeah, well, you know, as a Dominican said, this is really a, a significant issue. You know, students are simply not graduating high school financially literate. In fact, it might surprise you to hear that only 25% of students are required to take a personal finance course before they graduate. And that percentage is actually significantly lower for students in lower-income communities. So that means the vast majority of kids won't graduate without knowing how to budget save, manage credit or even understand the most basic of finance terms and concepts just before they're about to make some pretty major life decisions. Yeah. Look, going to college in and of itself, right. And managing that, especially if you have to take out student loans, setting a budget for yourself for all of those expenses that come with it. The list clearly goes on and on in terms of how useful this can be done. And I want to bring you back in here and just talk to me about some of the work that you've already done with financial literacy and what the response from students has been like, the response from students have been amazing uh first and foremost wanted to start my back home in Portland Oregon. Being able to help my youth that I grew up and surround the people that I see each and every single day in the off season when I'm back home. But then most recently we were in early november before I came to philadelphia were in Los Angeles where we had a couple of workshops with L. A. Unified school District and as well as compton Unified School District and it was great, the kids were very responsive and were very into all these conversations that we're having and it's something that I think having these conversations opened it up for not only themselves to ask questions, but also in their families and I think that's a key piece. We're making this a fun and interactive conversation that's happening not only in schools, but also at home, that's where we're really getting ahead. I did speak to me too about some of the tangible skills that people can take away, especially now right in an inflationary environment. I mean, oftentimes we learned the hard lessons during hard times and it would seem like now would be a good time to learn some of these crucial life lessons. Yeah, absolutely. You know, students unfortunately are graduating not even being able to speak the language at a time when as you mentioned, you know there's so many terms you know that there are being encountered with on a regular basis with inflation interest rates, mortgage rates, student loan, debt, etcetera, you know, you know into it's a global financial technology platform that serves over 100 million customers through our TurboTax and quickbooks, creditkarma and mail chimp products. And for 40 years we've been focused on helping our customers really achieve financial confidence. So we're taking that experience and then we're actually leveraging that to create educational resources around personal finance that we're making available to school districts around the country. And partnering with the Sioux Foundation has been an awesome opportunity for us to do that specifically with these personal finance workshops which will make available to everybody, but with a specific focus initially on underserved communities uh in Dominican my last question to you, what is the biggest personal finance a lesson that you think young people absolutely need to know? I think it's very simple learning how to budget and uh there's a unique rule that 503,020 rule for needs wants and obviously things that you aspire to have in the future, but that is always evolving and changing and I think as you start to master that and understand what your needs are and what your particular expenses and essentials maybe that can evolve and change. And so as long as you have that basic concept that can move with you and aspire to be something different as you grow in your life. Alright, gentlemen, thank you again.
