Coming up on a positive note where good news does exist. People of all abilities are making waves. It gives them the independence a lot of the equipment. So it's more of them out there and they just feel like one of the other surfers. One Long Islander has created the nation's first adaptive surfboard, helping everyone enjoy the water. These seniors are enjoying their summers. Proving age really is just a number on Long Island. It brings joy to our hearts and we do an awful lot of good stuff for an awful lot of good people. Christmas came early for some very deserving little ones watch as police officers team up with a local hospital to bring Children battling cancer. A bit of joy today. You're watching on a positive note where good news does exist. Now, you may have noticed something special about today's episode and if you didn't, it's ok because, you know, I got your back. This marks our 2/100 episode of on a positive note. That's right. 200 episodes of stories and news that just prove people are good that restore our faith in humanity. With each episode of on a positive note, try to bring you viewers at home stories that will move you, inspire you and warm your heart, providing you stories that make you smile stories that give you goose bumps and make your eyes water in a good way is really one of the joys of my life. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you for being a part of this 200 episode journey with us. So with all of that said, we'd be remiss not to put a fun spin on today's show. Here's how this episode is gonna go. We'll kick things off with some wonderful stories from all around our communities. It's fresh, new content that is sure to move you and then we're gonna hop into a really special portion of our 2/100 episode. It's our best of segment where we're gonna bring you some of our most beloved and some of our most beloved past stories. And to wrap this celebratory episode up, we've got our milestone moment segment where we'll celebrate some of your milestone moments we've covered in the past all while honoring one of ours, our 2/100 episode. Well, on that note, let's get this party started. We are kicking things off over on Long Island where one student's dream to surf is having a ripple effect on others. Nearly 10 years later, it's all thanks to an inspiring program that's helping Long Islanders with special needs do something they never thought possible. Take a look. Victoria Velasquez has conquered her first wave. One of the big waves came. They started pushing me really fast and she's ready to do it again. I was very happy, excited. It was very fun. She was able to get in the water on an adaptive surfboard with a chair on it to help hold her up while she was on the board, which I love the most is like, it gives them the independence a lot of the equipment. So it's more of them out there and they just feel like one of the other surfers. This is the 10th year students with Henry Viscardi school have learned to surf with surf for all. It started 10 years ago in honor of former student, Connor Troy who always wanted to surf in his memory. Students at his school are still getting the chance to live his dream. Thanks to scoot and surf and surf for all. I think the way that they are so dedicated to having people with disabilities, achieve something new and achieve something they didn't think could be possible. It's just a really important aspect and they should be really proud of that. You can just feel the self confidence, they can tackle other obstacles in their lives that they might not have thought would be possible. There are some nerves, especially for first time surfers and their parents. And I think for the parents it shows that, yeah, my kid has a disability but there are still things for him or her to do, you know, instead of just sitting in a wheelchair and they can be active, but many can't wait to get back in the water to do it again. I always love being here so I never miss it. I try not to miss it. The organization tells us they plan to launch even more camps just like this one later this year. Feel free to head to our website for more information. Well, it's no secret to call the holidays. Some of the happiest times of the year. Right. I mean, it's hard not to smile given all the traditions and friends and family time and heck, maybe even the gifts too. Well, now we've got your behind the scenes. Look at when Christmas came early for some deserving little ones over on Long Island. While more than 40 members of the Nassau County fraternal Order of Police teamed up with Cole Children's Hospital to deliver toys to families of Children undergoing cancer treatment. Look at all of that. You can just imagine the joy, these gifts brought those little fighters. It brings joy to our hearts and we do an awful lot of good stuff for an awful lot of good people, kids that are a little less unfortunate right now that aren't able to get out and get some toys. Well, it turns out the collaboration started when the daughter of a fraternal order of police member was receiving treatment herself at Cohen's Children Hospital. Talk about turning pain into purpose and speaking of turning pain into purpose, I've got a heartwarming update for you. Uh to a story. We brought you viewers over a year ago. Remember the Long Island woman who would go to Islanders ice hockey games to try and find herself a kidney donor. Well, she found a match. She found a donor to give her the gift of life, but it wasn't thanks to signs like these that Madison. So would hold up for the crowd and TV audience during the games. Well, thankfully and oddly enough, the mother of one of her colleagues ended up being a match when we were in uh I guess recuperating at home, we started like messaging each other on, on private message like we would message each other like all the time, every day. And the more I would get to know her through the messaging, the more I was just falling in love with her, I thought, oh my God, she's just the sweetest and we just got to be um just so close. Uh Too sweet. Well, Cathy there tells us she calls Madison her bonus daughter. Let's head on over from one celebration to another one. Now, this one though is a bit more pink and you're gonna love it. Let's take a look at sweet residents of a nursing and rehabilitation center partying in their very own Barbie world. Oh, my gosh. It's like too cute to handle. You're looking at seniors at the girl and assisted living center all dressed in pink for Barbie Fest. It was a two day celebration featuring fun events like Barbie side makeovers for residents in the center's Barbie Dream Salon. The seniors there got manicures makeovers and even hot pink hair extensions. We're also told many residents dressed in their best. Barbie and Ken inspired fashion in honor of the celebration. And today we're honoring all of our gorgeous grandmas here at Irwin and we're getting all glammed up and having fun and riding the Barbie wave. Well, we are celebrating and they are celebrating. I love it. Well, those ladies even got down to some Barbie themed beach volleyball and the dazzling workshops too. Now, we've got another story of some other cutie seniors celebrating over in Brooklyn for you. Now, we got to stop in and see some of the special summer activities set up for seniors at the Barry Street houses a New York City housing authority property take a look. It was bingo games galore at the Berry Street Community Center. As seniors chose to play with double the bingo cards and others decided they wanted to get pampered instead as volunteers also giving out manicures today, fresh manicures bingo were popular options, but there's tons of other activities happening today too, like crocheting and even Origami. It's so relaxing to play bingo to get your nails done. They look out for us, whatever we want, they have some place to go and just have fun. The Berry Street Houses, Tenant Association, President Vivian Legion tells us at one point, this room could barely be used and now it's become the center of attention just in time for summer. We don't have to sit in the house and think about all of the pain that we are going through and enjoying. Now that is what life is all about. The star of our next story over in New Jersey is sure to put a smile on your face. Her name is Miss Ruth Bell and get this. She was just celebrated as the oldest resident of Asbury Park, New Jersey. She says she's lived a full 105 years, but not despite adversity. Take a listen to her words of wisdom, mind your own business. That's a good one. Treat people the way you wanna be treated and there I can't force you, but there is a supreme being that looks after all of us. And if you have a faith, it don't say it. Now those are some good words of wisdom. Happy 105th to Miss Ruth Bell. And now it's time for one of my favorite parts of each episode. Here is one good thing that is sure to resonate with you no matter your age location or otherwise. For one group of students over in Washington DC, their graduation ceremony was 70 years in the making. University is the largest school for deaf students in the country. But back in the 19 fifties, it was initially segregated until a number of court battles established a division for black deaf students. Those students were still treated differently and despite attending class, they never received their diplomas. And that was until recently, the university held a graduation ceremony for 23 students and four teachers who were finally given the recognition they deserve. Now talk about a cause for celebration. Congratulations to those graduates. And that's today's one good thing.
