On A Positive Note: Honoring Our Heroes

Yeah. Mhm. Coming up on a positive note today, good news does exist. We're introducing you to a puff that's making history, how this therapy dog is helping local heroes while keeping the memory of a fallen one alive over in New Jersey. A lot of people that didn't go to prom, I found out they were too embarrassed to say they couldn't get the right now. One woman is making sure students today don't have those same worries. Her organization is getting seniors wardrobe ready for their senior proms. Plus we look at how one New Jersey man preserving a lost skill connected him to a big Hollywood star today. Good news does exist and you've come to the right place to find it. It's time for on a positive note. Hm. Hello everybody. I'm Jordan and thank you for tuning in. You're watching on a positive note where good news does exist here. On a positive note, you can be sure to find some of the most heartwarming stories from all around our communities. These are stories that will move you and inspire you. These are stories that just prove people are good. A little reminder. I think we could all use from time to time. Well, thank you for being here. And on that note, let's jump right into our first story. We're heading over to Long Island where the star of this story is sure to steal your heart. And for one family, this therapy pup in training will always have a special place in their hearts. The doggy's name is Luna in honor of fallen firefighter, William Billy Moon. Luna is Latin for Moon. Take a look at this one. She's only six months old, but she's already a star at the Suffolk County Sheriff's office. It's something fun to see and to know that the puppy is going to be doing really great work. Luna Latin for Moon is named in honor of F D N Y firefighter, William Billy Moon who died of a brain injury during a training accident at a Brooklyn firehouse in December. His family helped welcome Luna into the organization pinning a Suffolk County Sheriff's office badge onto her vest responders, law enforcement. They are selfless jobs and to know that there's a dog named after him that honors that legacy and the understanding of how hard that work is and how important it is to support those people is really nice. Luna was donated by Pause of War. She's the first therapy dog to join the ranks at the sheriff's office where she'll work alongside the Wellness unit. We realize that our staff are going through a lot whether they're in their twenties or they're in their fifties. The Wellness Unit launched in December of 20 22 in just five months, the sheriff's office says they've had more than 1000 interactions with sworn and civilian staff within the organization. They believe Luna will help foster a safe environment and improve the mood of employees. The Moon family says it's a beautiful tribute to Billy and are already looking forward to spending more time with the pup Luna. Actually, that that wouldn't be a question. Just a wonderful tribute there. Well, that fallen firefighters brother in law is a corrections officer with the county as well. A beautiful way to continue the family's legacy. Let's head on over to New Jersey now for another warm and fuzzy animal story or should we say a warm and feathery 11 family is working to domesticate a flightless species geese. Now be prepared to revel in some serious cuteness in our next story. And it's all for a good cause some little girls see a movie like Black beauty or Spirit and dream of owning a horse. Rachel Moglia Paulus. She always wanted a goose. There's actually a movie from 1996 called Fly Away Home and I know that just always stuck with me and I always wanted a goose. Now she and her family, this is her daughter Melania live on Fly Away Home farm in Lebanon township where they breed and raise Sebastopol geese. Sebastopol are a domesticated breed with a long history in Asia and Europe. They're now listed as threatened by the livestock Conservancy, an organization which works to preserve heritage breeds. They were almost extinct and there was only a pair left and they were sent to a zoo. I'm not sure where the zoo was, but it was in the US. And they bred that pear and that's why their genetics are very weak. They have a 24% hatch rate, bucking knows odds here. Our Juliet who hatched two weeks ago and this one named tiny, four days old turns out geese make better pets than most people think. So. There's actually no other species on earth that imprints the way a goose does on a human. They want to be around you, they want to cuddle, they want to snuggle with you. Like any other pet though. Don't run out and get a goose without thinking this through. Well, you have to be committed. They're at least a 20 year commitment, maybe even longer than that. I had to pull myself away from all this cuteness because I did want to meet the parents. So these are our three adults. Well, it turns out that attachment to their favorite human also means they're very, very protective when strangers approach, especially when you're getting near their nest where they have an egg. But I decided it was better to back off and just go hang out with the youngsters. After all, they grow up so fast. Just like human babies, you have to cherish every moment when they're young. The farmers sold about 60 goslings to people in need of a feathery companion, keeping their owners happy and those sweet babies protected. Well, just like Rachel. In our last story mentioned some little girls like playing with dolls, some with geese, but playing fun isn't always the reality for Children everywhere as the war wages on in Ukraine, one special girl scout troop out of New Jersey is doing their part to help those kids overseas feel celebrated. You're looking at scout brownie troop 98013. They're putting together birthday boxes for kids in Ukraine. Now those boxes are filled with treats like cakes, balloons, dolls, things other kids would enjoy on their birthdays. Now these boxes will be shipped over to Ukraine and given out to Children on their special days that troop prepped 20 boxes in all. Now the brownie troop raised money for for those boxes from their very own cookie sales and donations from their community. Shout out to Olivia Alexia Bianca Catherine and another Alexia from our team right here on a positive note. Way to go ladies. Well, from the story of young girls to a feel good story of young ladies. Let's hop on over to our next one. Now let me take you back for a minute. Do you remember your senior prom? Maybe getting ready with friends or family getting dressed in your favorite outfit. It's a big night. Many people look forward to for a long time. Right. Well, while prom can be a dream for some, the cost of the event can be a nightmare for others. Thanks to one organization out of New Jersey, that dream was just turned reality for one special young lady. Take a look. So with Cali is a shop that offers sewing classes for teens and young adults in Newark. They have 11 week program with me. And um during this 11 weeks, we we, we choose a project this year the students big project is working on a dress for Emma Ricks Knights, an honor student from Shabazz High School. At first, I didn't want to go to prom because I didn't see the significance. Emma is a second year senior who skipped from last season after having a tough year and no one to attend with. But this year she'll be decked out in a custom made dress. The type of energy that I wanted to um display was a very luxurious rego extravagant showcasing my dark skin and the dress isn't all she'll get. We want to give them the car, the hair, the makeup we know proms can be very expensive for our inner city students. So with Kelly found Emma through bold beginnings, a new nonprofit with a celebrity Ceo Naughty by nature rapper Retch. A lot of people that didn't go to prom, I found out they were too embarrassed to say they couldn't get the right, the fact that she decided to push through and fail the first time. But then the second time come back as an honor student. To me, that was beyond amazing. Like she was so deserving of this Emma now, graduating with a bright future and a prom experience to remember. It is something that I don't wanna miss. And I'm really grateful for this experience and we are wishing her the prom night. She has always dreamt up now over in the Bronx. Another thoughtful program is giving kids someone to talk to and to share their feelings with all while providing them skills necessary to enter the workforce. Check it out. The community centers, restorative Justice program is in its second year now already giving kids 16 to 21 years old around the borough opportunities in the construction, culinary and retail fields. They tell us that by providing training like this, they give kids a place they can feel comfortable to express themselves. We do training barbershop training, um lifeguard training as well as we have other internship programs here. Um Culinary arts and things like that to try to help them get some type of economic um you know, assistance. Now, maybe the best part, these services are completely free of charge, talk about making a real difference. And now it's time for one good thing where we share one good thing happening in the world. And it's one good thing that will resonate with all of us no matter age location or otherwise. So, graduating is a huge accomplishment for anyone. Right. Well, for one woman, it was a milestone. She was not going to miss no matter what that woman, Kelsey, he managed to attend her college graduation ceremony. Despite the fact that she was going into labor as she was set to walk. Yes, in labor as she was handed her diploma. Take a look at this incredible moment. This student has told me and us, I'm going to walk across that stage. Despite the fact that I am 38 weeks pregnant, I am dilated and I can't wait for you, Russ and your friends to talk for an hour and a half. So I need to graduate quickly. And so what did you think? I said that is just amazing. I mean, moms are something, huh? Well, congratulations all around for you, Kelsey. And there you have it, ladies and gents that wraps up today's episode.
