On A Positive Note: People of All Abilities Get to Surf Thanks to Adaptive Surfboard

We are kicking things off over on Long Island where one student's dream to surf is having a ripple effect on others. Nearly 10 years later, it's all thanks to an inspiring program that's helping Long Islanders with special needs do something they never thought possible. Take a look. Victoria Velasquez has conquered her first wave. One of the big waves came, they started pushing me really fast and she's ready to do it again. I was very happy, excited. It was very fun. She was able to get in the water on an adaptive surfboard with a chair on it to help hold her up while she was on the board, which I love the most is like, it gives them the independence a lot of the equipment. So it's more of them out there and they just feel like one of the other surfers. This is the 10th year students with Henry Viscardi school have learned to surf with surf for all. It started 10 years ago in honor of former student, Connor Troy, who always wanted to surf in his memory. Students at his school are still getting the chance to live his dream. Thanks to Scoot and surf and surf for all. I think the way that they are so dedicated to having people with disabilities achieve something new and achieve something they didn't think could be possible. It's just a really important aspect and they should be really proud of that. You can just feel the self confidence, they can tackle other obstacles in their lives that they might not have thought would be possible. There are some nerves, especially for first time surfers and their parents. And I think for the parents it shows that, yeah, my kid has a disability but there are still things for him or her to do, you know, instead of just sitting in a wheelchair and they can be active, but many can't wait to get back in the water to do it again.
