On February 19, 1991, John Singleton became the first African American to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for his film “Boyz n the Hood”. Filmmaker Stanley Nelson has been addressing representation in Hollywood and beyond for decades, through his films about African-American history, and experience as well as his nonprofit dedicated to advancing social justice causes through film.
