One Good Thing: Community Celebrates Local Hero

now we know the world can be tough sometimes with what seems like endless mind numbing news. So to take a break, we'd like to tell you about one good thing happening in the world today on Cheddars news wrap and today's good thing highlights one of the honorable first responders as he throws in the towel. After over four decades fire chief Chester bryson Owen sr of humboldt Tennessee has spent the last 45 a half years of his life serving his community. So his crew and community wanted to give back to Owens and make it known how much they appreciated his service. Several humboldt firefighters put together a surprise celebration for him to celebrate his retirement at Rachel's diner where Owen spent every morning before his shift fans, family and firefighters and fire chiefs from neighboring cities traveled near and far to be there with him on a special and final day Owens also found out a week before. The surprise that the state of Tennessee has made him the honorary fire chief. As a very young boy, Owens has always had a love and a dream of being a fireman and a pilot. When he was a teenager in high school Owens was visiting his relatives in Louisville when he noticed smoke coming from their neighbor's house. He knew there were people inside the building so he fearlessly entered the house filled with smoke and fire and assisted Everyone of getting out safely. He says the incident was his first real calling to become a firefighter and in January of 1977 he was hired as a firefighter for Hft. During his initial interview with the chief, he was asked what he wanted to do in life. Oh, I just wanted, I want to be chief. He was hired on the spot and 17 years later he finally became chief. Now having tackled his dreams and saved many lives. He's ready to take some time for himself. He says he has three trips in mind that he's going to take one by motorcycle, one by car and one by RV. He plans to spend time with his wife and himself and simply enjoying the town that he spent half of a century protecting and serving.
