The poaching of exotic animals is a huge problem around the world, especially in Africa. According to the African Wildlife Foundation, up to 30,000 African elephants were killed last year, and the lion is extinct in seven African countries. Fei Fang is an Assistant Professor at the Insitute for Software Research at Carnegie Mellon University, and she has focused her work on solving this problem. Fang has developed PAWS, a machine-learning algorithm that helps patrollers better control land susceptible to poaching. Through machine learning, Fang has been able to develop patrol routes, and manage the timing of when officers should be at each location. Fang is hoping to expand her research and work to multiple locations, including China. She is proud to protect endangered animals.
