Puerto Rican Coffee Taste Test With 787 Coffee

Our celebration continues for Hispanic heritage month and recently had the pleasure of getting to chat with the folks over at 787 coffee, coffee straight from the mountains of Puerto Rico. Event coordinator Brianna Fernandez joined us right here at studio and even brought along some caffeinated cups for us to give a try, take a look Brianna Good to have you here. Thanks so much for joining us. So I here because our producers set this up so perfectly for us. You brought three different kinds of coffee for me to try today. A classic one, a rum infused in a whiskey one. So tell us a little bit about this classic one first. So the classic, it's amazing. It's single source from our own farm in Puerto rico. The tasting notes are dark chocolate, butter and citrusy. Never heard of butter before and coffee, but this is like, it's transformative, It's amazing and you can. And as somebody who drinks a lot of coffee always sort of wanted to have it hit the front of your, of your tongue to sort of figure out the different taste of it and then write the butter is good because it adds like this creamy sort of element here too smooth. And so this was came in fresh from our farm only two weeks ago. So it might be the freshest coffee you've ever had. And would you recommend this for maybe in the mornings is that sort of like a good morning brew. Absolutely. It's a standard all day kind of brew. This is what we use in our espresso drink. So it always gets the job. Alright, so the next one we have on the list is a rum infused one. So tell us a little bit about this because you guys, it doesn't actually have alcohol in it. You just soaked the beans indirect, we soak it in a barrel, the alcohol evaporates and then it's just left with this amazing cinemania. It's something like you've never interested. It's amazing. This is actually my favorite. That's all I drink, the reggae. Amazing. But do you know what's interesting about this because it feels like a very like fall sort of like almost like pumpkin kind of taste almost a little bit here interesting that is like I want to wear like a nice chunky sweater while. Alright. The final one we have over here is a whiskey one. So what sort of flavor notes are we looking in a whiskey? So this has a little bit of berry and a little bit of vanilla. So it's similar to the rum but it's going to finish a lot differently. Hmm Yeah, it does. It has a little bit more of, if you like boulder coffees, I think you would really like something like this definitely now of course like 7 87 coffee as you mentioned was is farm to home coming all the way from farms in Puerto rico. Tell us a little bit about how that 7 87 came to be and where you know why Puerto rico. Right, So our ceo says coffee is just an excuse. We went to the poorest part in Puerto rico where there were no jobs available. So Most coffee farmers make like under $67 a day. We pay our farmers no less than $9. Amazing. That is unheard of. It's a completely different coffee business model. So we really wanted to get in there. One of the partners is Puerto Rican and really support local commerce and just you know, be there absolutely another term I've never heard of before. You're also reforesting farms become 100% agroforestry. Did I say that correct? Okay, explain what that means over the course of the next three years, what you're trying to do here? Yeah. So we don't go in and use any weed killers or kill any of the surrounding life. We let the, you know, we grow banana trees and let the banana drop and fertilize the soil. It's all about like inviting nature back into everything. We're not like weeding, there's no brown on the ground, it's all life. It's all green, which is really good. So obviously because you have so much copy knowledge, we want to play little game with you called brew or bust. I'll kind of rip off on some sort of idea or info here. You tell me if it's brew true or bust if this is false. Okay, so 7 87 coffee as you mentioned, plants their own coffee trees brew or bust. Okay. 7 87 coffee farmers paid similarly to other coffee farmers brew or bust. Alright, avoiding weed killers that we just talked about is beneficial when it comes to growing coffee. Okay. Next one you will get drunk off of rum and whiskey infused coffee beans. Okay, next 17 87. Coffee is only available in Puerto, rico and new york everywhere. We have an online store, so yes, you can get it everywhere. Okay. 7 87 coffee, delicious. Yes, total brew, total brew because I obviously have had three of them. Final one coffee shrinks you if you drink it when you're younger, it keeps you small. I'll say brew. No, I think it's a total but no, because that's just so interesting because we were talking about this before. You've had coffee since you were a young kid also.
