Puerto Rico's Slow and Painful Recovery
Nearly two months after Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico is still in recovery. Government estimates put the total damage at $90 billion, but that only tells part of the story. Power still has yet to return to almost half of the island, and 25% of Puerto Ricans still don't have access to drinkable water. Ahmed Shihab-Eldin, Senior Correspondent at AJ+, recently returned from the island territory. He joins Cheddar to discuss what he saw. He says that the dire situation millions of Puerto Ricans find themselves in is a failure on the part of the government. Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rossello originally hoped to restore power to the island by Christmas, but that has been pushed back. As a result of the slow recovery, many Puerto Ricans are leaving the island and not coming back. Shihab-Eldin says that the airport is packed with people trying to leave for places like Florida.
