Are you wondering what the best gadgets on the market are? Maybe you're looking for an expert opinion on the hottest summer clothes and accessories. You can end your search and start your days with Kate Sands, known on Instagram as HonestlyKate, and Wake Up With Cheddar.
Q: What was life like prior to joining the Cheddar News team?
Kate: I've always had my Instagram, @honestlykate, where I've done partnerships with beauty brands, tech brands, fashion brands, and I still have that. It's really helped me get in the door for so many hosting opportunities, and then I'm also an Amazon Lifestyle host as well as a Today Show correspondent. I'm so excited to be working with Cheddar because I feel like it's more up my alley. I feel like with some of the networks that I've been on, it's a different demographic that's watching. Maybe they're a little bit older than me and so maybe sometimes I'm talking about products and styling that's not as relatable to my audience on Instagram. So I feel like Cheddar is that perfect fit.
Q: What do you think the biggest misconception about being a lifestyle expert is?
Kate: I think people think it's very glamorous, and I want to tell everyone, always, that it's probably the least glamorous job. My job mostly consists of me hauling giant Costco bags with products and tech pieces around the city, and dripping my a** off in sweat, and then trying to pull it all together when I get in front of the camera. I call it the Wild Wild West. It's chaotic and crazy, and then also it's just very exciting for me.
Q: What would you say is the biggest accomplishment in your career so far?
Kate: I work with the Make-A-Wish team and this is an organization that is very near and dear to my heart. I've been a wish granter for four years now and being able to use my connections through my Instagram, through my TV hosting to make some of the wishes come true and just have that ability to reach out to those people and those brands, to me, has just exceeded everything and made everything worthwhile. Being in front of the camera and having an Instagram presence is such a self-absorbed life that our generation has and we're very much about me, me, me, and I think it's really important to give back.
Q: What are some of your favorite hobbies?
Kate: My favorite hobby is cooking, even though I'm the worst chef. I tried to do a little Instagram live during the pandemic called Cooking With Kate for the Girl Who Can't Cook and my food never comes out looking pretty. I also love to dance. No one really knows that. I'm not the best dancer at all, but I dance all the time. I take dance classes. I always love to move. I'm really adventurous, very outdoorsy, which I think people wouldn't really know about because they think I'm this fashionista. I also hike every weekend with my dog!
This or That:
Q: Seafood or Steak?
Kate: Seafood!
Q: Breaking Bad or The Wire
Kate: The Wire! But I have a very specific reason why. Dominic West, (who played the lead character Jimmy McNulty in The Wire) was a mentor to me at the beginning of my career. I was an extra on The Affair and I was so young — I was still in high school — and he was helping me. I met him, and I was like "I'm such a big fan. I've watched The Wire. My family, we love you!" He kind of took me in as a daughter and helped me navigate the world and ultimately I decided that acting was not where I wanted to go with my career, but I'll always pick a show with him in it.
Q: Sunny day or rainy day?
Kate: Sunny day!
It should be noted we had a pretty lengthy discussion about the pros and cons of both days. We agreed that rainy days are a perfect option when you don't want to venture outside!
Q: Beach day or picnic in the park?
Kate: Ugh! I feel like that's a tie for me. I'm such a beach girl. I love the beach, grew up on the beach surfing, but you know what, the park, to me, is so special. I feel like it's a place to relax, and I feel like seeing greenery, especially in the chaos of New York City, and being in this industry, it's very relaxing.
Q: Would you rather read a book or watch a good movie?
Kate: That is like a trick question! I'm more of a TV fanatic than a movie fanatic so I feel like if it was TV or a book, I would pick TV. I'll go with reading a book.
