Rapper Consequence Talks New Album 'Nice Doing Business With You'

Welcome back, Our next guest is known for working with artists like Jay Z Diddy Kanye West and now he's back with his latest album, Nice Doing Business With You, which is set to release this fall. We're talking about consequence. He's coming off his fourth Grammy win for Hurricane featured on Kanye West's Donde. That was actually one of my favorite songs and now his latest single, Bloodstain is already doing great, Take a Look course. I earlier, I sat down with four time Grammy winning artist and producer consequence to talk all about his new single and his upcoming album, Take a Look. Bloodstain is a hit with fans. A song got over one million views on Youtube in just a month. What does it mean to you to have this single do so well with your fans? Um it's great. Um you know, I have a storied history with Kanye West, he produced blood stain and you know, we fresh off winning the Grammy for Hurricane uh which featured a little baby in the weekend um off the off the Donde record. And so you know, it's it's been an exciting, exciting summer. That's actually one of my favorite songs on the album. I have to say it's one of my favorites. Thank you. We know Kanye and 88 really killed the beat on Bloodstain. That's why so many people like it for many reasons. What was your reaction when you heard it? And then did that change the flow or versus after you heard it initially? Well uh here's a, here's a little Secret Kanye actually gave me blasting as a gift, he heard, he heard the wraps, he had heard those wraps and was like listen I'm gonna I'm gonna give you a gift, I'm gonna, I'm gonna make a record around what you're saying. So he actually, so I didn't have to actually change anything, he made the beat to, to my raps. Kanye is a genius when it comes to producing and rapping. And what was your reaction when one of the biggest selling rappers of all time said that too. I mean, you know obviously it's exciting, it's humbling is you know, I don't I don't take our relationship, I've never taken our relationship or friendship or brotherhood for granted and so you know, hey, when a billionaire say you got the bob, you got the bob, You've been friends for 20 years, did that make it easier when you're collaborating with Kanye or not really? And in some instances, yes, in some instances it makes it tougher just because you know, as we've grown together, the level of excellence, the tears have increased, they've gotten higher. Obviously, you know, when we started out, we were working on an 18 80 in new york and in Hoboken and that's where you got some of the classics like spaceship obviously and the good, the bad and the ugly and getting out the game and you know, obviously as things have expanded and grown, you know, so did the taste level and so did the expectation level. And so you gotta keep rather to the occasion. So, you know, so, so for me, Bloodstain is in the lineage of those records and taken into a higher to lyrically, a lot of artists on your on your level of consequence, you know that? Yeah, yeah. I mean, I would probably just replace a lot with none. But anyway, alright, let's take it. So how is your creative process change when it comes to writing in the last few years, as you said, because you're going higher and higher? Yeah, well, I think what I think honestly there's, but there's a, there's a bass, right? There's a base to to all of this, which is just the ground, which is the hunger you you have to keep that um, as a foundation, you know, so I never walk into a situation I live by the rule, you're only as good as your last game, right? So I never walk into a situation with my catalog um, on my resume, at the forefront of the situation, I'm always here to get to make new history, you know, so that's how I look at it. And so I approach everything and, you know, my new album is coming um very soon. Uh it's called Nice Doing Business with You. And um, that was my approach to making it and, you know, there's been a few hip hop outlets that I've heard it already and, and deemed it as flawless and classic, and so that's, you know, it's like the best way I could equate it is like look at Steph curry, right? Um you know, two years ago, you know, the Warriors were in a regroup situation right after, after have been in after I had been a dynasty, uh and he had to really go back two square square one with the jumper, square one with the lay of square one with breaking ankles. And you know, that hard work is why they actually want to final this year. I love that analogy, That's so good. Alright, in your new album, you have chris rock, why do you want to work with him? Um because he's he's probably um the greatest comedian outright, you know, living right this minute, um arguably definitely most people's top five and he's the top five, he's the top five friend as well, you know, he um he um actually we met a few years ago um he said that my verse on Kanye's late registration album, which I was featured on, gone was his favorite verse on that album as far as from a guest feature standpoint. Um and we continued to cross paths, you know, we cross paths when Kanye uh had did the Wyoming Roll out, he was there um and I wound up working with him on his album Tambourine, that was the netflix special, We worked on that, I did two songs for that in like an hour and it's the fastest money I ever made in my life. And and actually was nominated for a grammy. And um he gave me probably one of the best compliments I've ever received in my life. And he said anytime consequences around. I know that the classic is being made, wow, that is the ultimate compliment. Yeah. So um when we elected to meet up um after all these records have been done, we had met up when I went by his home and um I wanted him to to do something uh for my upcoming project. And um he basically, we had a conversation and that's what became the feature. What people are hearing is his stream of consciousness from the conversation that we had Um in the car and they turned into like a 16 bar verse. I love it. Overall. What are you hoping people take away from your new album? Uh that this guy consequences. Really, really good. He's really good cause you gotta really be good to be able to write for somebody else and then go back and be an artist and then hit the and then hit the three. So when I hit the three, I want everybody to stand up and thanks to consequence, he was so nice. He's the four time Grammy winning artist and producer and his album is coming out very, very soon
