A rare blue supermoon is set to rise in the sky tonight. The supermoon will appear at 9:36 p.m. eastern time. Blue moons sometimes happen when the lunar cycle is 29.5 days long, just slightly shorter than the average calendar month. This means there are two full moons in one month. The first one happened on August 1st. This typically only happens every two or three years. And contrary to its name, they're usually more of a milky gray color and this will be the closest full moon of the year. A mere 220,000 miles away. Give or take which is more than 100 miles closer than the last full moon.
