Recapping 'House of the Dragon,' 'She-Hulk,' and 'The Rehearsal'

So here to talk more about the House of the dragon and other new tv content is David Wall, the editor in Chief over at Gizmodo. David good to have you here. Thanks so much for joining us. So let's talk about game of Thrones, fans who caught last night's longer way to premier. Met with some classic game of Thrones scenes including a visit to the brothel, some bloody battles and leaving really little to the imagination. So did you think the first episode delivered on everything Game of Thrones fans really wanted here? Yeah, I think you just hit it perfectly that it delivered what everybody expects of Game of Thrones. There was blood, there was breasts, there was gore, there was dragons. It's important to know one of the very first shots when they come back from what the title card, dragon flying from the air. The producers, the director knew what fans were looking for, what their complaints had been about the final season of the last show and I think they worked hard to try to be like, okay, we're not messing around with this one, here is the good stuff. Okay, so by the end of the Premier and again, I haven't seen this is just what my producers have told me. It's essentially the fans are learning that Princess Rainier Atar Gary in is the heir to the throne here in Game of Thrones. One of the central story lines was a woman from the same family fighting for full power in a world full of men. So, David should Thrones, fans expect this story to continue to feel similar to what they've already seen in the original Game of Thrones. Well, I think there will definitely be similarities, I mean, it's set in the same world, we're going to have the same sort of politics happening. You know, it is a battle for control of the throne, which is a pretty familiar theme for us as game of Thrones fans, but they're definitely gonna mix it up. I mean, this is going to be a lot more political, I think, not out and out warfare at least not for the first couple of seasons, there's a lot of new families and new parts of the kingdoms that we haven't seen before. So there are new political dynamics. I think we're gonna hear a lot more from some of the overseas powers, They're already talking about bravos in the first episode and I think that they want to stay as close to that ideal of okay, we know what you liked about the first one while still not making this a total re tread because to your point like yeah, it's, you know, it's a young tar gary in girl fighting for her right to the throne. That's awful familiar. So we've got to find some new ways to spice it up and I'm sure that's something that they've been addressed. Let's also get to this other point that that I really think is big is how much pressure on HBO is there right now, to get this right given the fact that they're investing so much in this franchise, especially for spinoffs down the road for HBO max. And given the fact that a lot of fans were kind of Unpleased with how the season of game of Thrones ended, how much pressure is on their on HBO max to get this right here. I think it's the most pressure imaginable. I think this is the most important thing at HBO max right now. The most important thing at HBO. One of the most important things that Warner overall, especially given how much cost cutting they've seen lately. Other shows, movies getting cut, showing that they can take this franchise which was once such a centerpiece. Not only a fan favorite but a critical favorite. Winning Emmys, it was huge and important and there's a perception that they fumbled the ball so badly in the final season, they need to show, okay, we know what we're doing, we can make another giant commercial and critical success and we can revive this franchise if they dropped the ball on this one, no one's gonna care about Song of Ice and Fire anymore. I mean they kind of blew it in that last season. If they blow it again, they just lost their chance to have their own Lord of the Rings, you were talking about Ring of Power earlier, they're one of the biggest competitors amazon now has its own fantasy franchise with its own rich world and its own massive I. P. HBO doesn't get this one right, amazon is going to eat their lunch. Yeah I think you're so spot on there let's switch gears and talk about a very different kind of show the first episode of She hulk attorney at law at Disney. Plus on thursday what we're sort of initial reactions of marvel's first foray now into comedy. Well I I thought it was great I mean I love that for one thing they've embraced some of what fans really like about she hulk in the comic book, she hulk is frequently and more of a comedic character. She breaks the fourth wall, she's one of the few characters in the comic book universe who knows she's in a comic book and so they've taken that into the marvel cinematic universe and into the tv shows and really given us a here we haven't seen before, she's funny, she's clever, she's breaking that fourth wall and after so many different marvel shows I mean they've been cranking them out and they've all been great. I was a huge fan of MS marvel, I thought it was amazing we were kind of getting in a rut there. Okay let's introduce a new young hero, let's have them fight their villain and then let's tease their connection to the future Avengers. It's really nice to have a break from that. She's a lawyer. This is more of a city, it's gonna be more episodic. It's funny. I think it's the perfect little break that we need in the M. C. You're right. Alright. Finally we got to talk about Nathan Fielder's mind blowing experimental documentary comedy show. The rehearsal. It's just finished the season one finale friday night but literally David, it's impossible to describe this show. What do you make of this show so far? Because I feel like everybody's talking about it. Yeah, it is impossible to describe and I think it's also wrong to describe in the sense of this is one of those shows where it's gonna be so much better for you if you just go into it blind and be surprised by it. What we can tell you is that Nathan Fielder, I think he's one of the real like unappreciated geniuses of the comedy world. He made his name with the show, Nathan for you that was on the com channel. He's often been categorized as a certain kind of cringe humor. It's usually at his expense involving real world people and kind of making fun of them. But really you're making fun of Nathan and this show sets him up in comedic environments that are mostly reality. But Nathan is kind of the puppet master behind the scenes pulling the screen and and you can see like I'm struggling to explain even though I thought about it all morning. How am I gonna talk about this show? It's just brilliant the way he's messing with the form and how he's ultimately sort of making it about his weaknesses as a person and it's about his development and not necessarily all these people that seem like they're going to be the butt of the joke, but really aren't so true because nobody knows if this is real. These are actors. Nobody knows. I think that that's part of the mystery in all of this as well. David. Such a pleasure to have you here. David is the editor in chief over at Gizmodo.
