The CDC released a report today with troubling statistics about the number of reported syphilis cases in newborns. It says cases have reached quote dire levels rising 10 fold in the last decade and nearly 32% in just one year. There were more than 3700 cases reported in 2022. Up from 2021 numbers of just over 2800 and a huge rise from the 335 cases reported just over a decade ago. Back in 2012, the CDC recommends all pregnant women be screened for the infection which can lead to blindness, hearing loss or even death of a newborn.
