Salt & Straw Celebrates National Ice Cream Day

And welcome back friends. I need to know I'm Baker Richard. And so you know, this Sunday is national Ice Cream. So to celebrate, we've brought in a celebrity endorsed ice cream brand which has some very unique flavors. Hannah. Yeah, we're talking about salt and Straw. They make small batch handmade ice cream and joining us to talk about that is Frank Hernandez Laura, the general manager at Salt and Straw. Frank. Welcome. Yes, Frank. Hi. Thank you. Thanks for having us. So Salt and Straw, love them all over the, all over the country. You guys launched back in 2011. A lot of people though first heard about your ice cream when Chrissy Tegan actually tweeted about this in 2019, she wrote, I wanna get this right? My absolute favorite ice cream place. What was that like? When you finally got a big coveted endorsement from Celebs, it's incredible to get something like that, you know. Well, speaking about coveted Celebs, Dwayne, the Rock Johnson has also invested in. Tell us about that. Uh So we make a flavor with him around the winter time. We use his tara tequila to make like a boozy eggnog So that brings into a good question here, Frank, because what makes salt and strawberry is you have the traditional flavors, but you also have different flavors. I mean, you have goat cheese, Marian berry, habanero pepper. I mean, these are the ones you've bought, by the way for us. Why do you guys keep going into these sort of different sort of, uh spaces here and try to do different things here? I think for us is just to try to innovate what ice cream is. Um It's not traditionally just to make like overly sweet ice cream. It's just to find flavors that work together. Well, let's try some of them because I think you brought these here. I wanna start with the Habanero. Is that this one? You wanna start with the goat cheese? They're both the goat cheese. Oh Yeah. OK, perfect. So we're trying to go and what makes you think like goat cheese would work with ice cream? Like how, what's the testing process like on something like that? Yeah. So first you're gonna get um it's kind of like taking your, your palate on like a little trip. It's very tangy. You get tangy, then you get sweet with the berries and then at the end, you get the spiciness at the very end, it's like that little hit at the very end. And you also make like olive oil and strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper. What um inspires these flavors for you, it's just the, uh, the culinary part of, um, you know, making flavors and trying to find things that are unique and work together. Well, we know, um, I'm officially Cheddar's quiz daddy at this night. Yes, exactly. So, I love to sort of play a little game. Do you want to play with us where we ask some trivia questions about ice cream break? Let's test your knowledge versus, ok, so you guys both have a little cup over here. So all you need to do is ring it in by just hitting your little. So I honey lavender. Who you can eat that? Well? OK. First question guys in our ice cream test. Uh starting from the beginning. Who is believed to make ice cream? First? The Greeks around 300 BC under Alexander, the great the Romans around 60 BC under Emperor Nero or the emperors of the Tang dynasty in China around 7 50 ad. Do you guys know who first made it? Who what happened? This is the Chinese, the $10. It is a point for ado. Yes. Yes, yes. All right. Next one. When and where was the ice cream maker first invented? 19 06 in Hawaii. 18 43 in Philadelphia. 18 86 in London. I'm gonna guess Philadelphia. Philadelphia is right. All right. Uh All right. We have another one which us president loves ice cream so much. He spent $6000 in one summer on it. Washington. What I know this because I just read his bio. Uh, Thomas said no. Washington, Nixon Roosevelt or Clinton. I'm Franklin. Uh, no, it was George Washington Records Show. He spent $200.01 summer on ice cream a day which is 6000 in today's dollar. Finally, last question. This is their winner. Uh, we all love ice cream here in the US. But how many pounds of it do we make a year? £6.4 billion? £1.5 billion or £500 million with six? Oh, I don't have the answer to this. What is it? Is it? Wait, can I make a guess that I'm gonna say 500 million. All right, Richard, by producing 6.4 billion. You get the job at salt and straw. I, by the way, what do you think of the goat cheese? Oh, so good. So, so, so good. I love la. Yeah, the lavender is a little more smooth. Uh It kind of feels like you're drinking tea. You guys feel like you're drinking tea. Habanero. I didn't think I would love it. I love it. It's so good. All right.
