Sarah Michelle Gellar is teaming up with Wells Fargo Active Cash card to help consumers pursue their passion via Instagram sweepstakes. The iconic actress joined Cheddar News to talk about her career, family, the legacy of her iconic role on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and her partnership with Wells Fargo. Gellar noted that during the pandemic, people had to push off things that they wanted to try, and as things ease, the bank contacted her to promote Active Cash, to help users get back to achieving those goals. "Now that, as we're slowly sort of circulating back into the world — and whatever that looks like for you, we have to find joy again. We have to find the things that make us happy and that we're passionate about," she said.

Sarah Michelle Gellar on 'Buffy' Legacy, Teaming With Wells Fargo on Active Cash

I'm baker machado and our next guest needs no introduction, but if we had to give her one, well we say she's definitely an acting icon that's always slaying her roles. We're talking about Sarah Michelle gellar, the actor loved by fans for her roles in Buffy the vampire slayer and I know what she did last summer and so much more and now she's partnering with Wells Fargo that to encourage people to activate their passions and get credit for trying new things. And joining us now to discuss is the one the only Sarah Michelle gellar Sarah welcome to the show. Hi. So we're gonna get to this amazing partnership in a moment. But first we have to talk about this being the 25th anniversary of the iconic Buffy. The vampire slayer doesn't seem like it during the pandemic. So many people binge these classic iconic shows. That was of course one of them. What does it feel to have this brand new generation of fans who love the show and it's incredible. I think as an actor, you hope to do something that stands the test of time that still holds up especially right now because I believe that we're watching television with a very different lens and extremely critical lens and the fact that the themes and what we were trying to say with the show still holds up. I mean that's incredible. I mean even on top of that, I mean Buffy the vampire slayer was really ahead of its time. A strong female lead, you had the l G. B. T. Q. Plus representation on that show. I mean did you almost realize at the time that the show was making such a statement at that time? You know you're in such a bubble when you're doing a show like that. And I always tell the story that the first season we did the show the WB at the time was a very small known network that didn't even have full clearance across the U. S. And I spent my summer in north Carolina filming. I know what you did last summer in Scream two and no one saw the show there like it didn't even air. So I had no idea people were even watching it. So it just slowly realize I think a lot of that comes in hindsight when you get to look back and really sort of understand and appreciate the impact that we made with that show. Just watching clips of the show and last year you voiced Teela in the show. Masters of the universe revelation Tara. I don't think a lot of people know you voiced quite a few characters in your career. What's your creative process when creating these voices for the characters? It's the ultimate job. It's so freeing because you don't you let go of everything else. Right? I mean you're in your sweats and for Tila I was in my house because it was the heart of Covid and we couldn't go anywhere. And so they sent me a full recording studio in the house that my husband and I had to put together, which is hysterical and probably could have been its own television show in and of itself in this recording studio. And you just, it's very freeing. You can do things you wouldn't normally do, what would be your dream role or character you've accomplished so much, who would you love to portray? You know, I've been thinking about that a lot lately and I think I'm an extremely fortunate position where I've accomplished so much more than I think I ever even set out to do as an actor. You hope to have one role that people remember you for. But I've had like a multitude of those that I think for now it's about, I just wanna have fun. I wanna create and I want to be an escape for people because let's be honest, I mean, the world sucks right now and entertainment is that at that time where you actually get to disappear for a little bit and let go of all that. So true. Okay, so we know acting is one of your many passions Sarah, you've got this partnership right now with Wells Fargo. You're encouraging people to pursue their passion. So tell us a little bit more about why you wanted to team up with Wells Fargo here. Well, they came to me this idea for Wells Fargo, Active Cash. And the idea is, you know, for the last two years we've all stopped living? You know, we've, we've let go of everything And now that as we're slowly sort of circulating back into the world and whatever that looks like for you, we have to find joy again. We have to find the things that make us happy and that and that, that we're passionate about or the things that we kept saying, we try one day and we put off and then when life stops for two years we realize, oh, that day is now like it's time to do those things and how do you encourage people in a fiscally responsible way to do those things? And that's sort of the point of active cash is to not only encourage, but to reward you for trying those things because you'll get cash back each time you do it. So maybe it's doing that same thing again one more time or maybe it's trying the next thing on the list. So not only will people get money, but they also get a financial consultation, which I think is great. Tell us more about that and how it benefits users. Well, I think at the end of the day to like there's, I try to be as fiscally responsible as I can, but I'm no expert. So to be able to sort of sit down and weigh it cost versus reward because that's also something we have to think about too. It's not just what costs something, you know, um physically, but what is what's the cost emotionally? What do we get back from doing that? What does that bring the joy to our lives? And then it's a really sort of big cyclical experiment and experience because when I'm joyful that leads to other people being joyful and it's there's what's the price for that? Well, that's you can't put a cost on that. Absolutely. Well, also, even just the importance of getting back into new hobbies or discovering hobbies that maybe you didn't do over the last little while, especially post pandemic. How important is that here, Sarah? It's extremely important. Like especially like I want to go shopping because I'm so used to being in sweatpants and I'm mad memo that I was supposed to wear like a muted sound. I think when we hang up, I'm going to shop to be able to next time I'm a little bitter about that. I know that is that is our fault. By the way, By the way, this we did not even plan. This is like we're in sync today. We do want to ask about your husband Freddy Prince JR and you for so many of us, your relationship goals. We grew up with you guys. So what's the secret? And I know this isn't an easy question because both of us are married, but what's the secret to a successful marriage, especially being in the same business. I mean, if I knew I could retire on that separate, separate bathrooms, I, you know, I think ultimately any relationship, whether it's a marriage, a working relationship, a friendship, it's about putting the work in and I think we live in a society where we're so quick to dispose of things and you know, if your tv breaks, you buy a new one, you don't fix it, you don't, everything is new better faster. My my kids were complaining the other day because they didn't want to watch live television because they had to wait two minutes for credit when they could just skip it on digital. And I think it's it's really about about putting the work in and it's oh my God, I love those photos of you guys. Such a family and such a cute couple. Still even to this day Sarah, I gotta ask, do you have any side passions that maybe we should be knowing about? Maybe that I should be getting into? Let's see, I mean right now you're getting a sneak peek at my office which is all of my first edition books. I I love, I have an almost complete first edition dr Seuss collection behind me right now is my first edition Arthur Rackham who is one of my favorite illustrators. I also collect, you know, modern, I have a harry potter first edition collection. Let's see during the pandemic. I like a lot of people got into gardening and growing our own food and and and sort of the bigger discussion around that about what it does for our environment, what it does as a family. So that's sort of been that's a new one. I mean I grew up in new york city so like I grew mold. I mean I think that was all I knew how to do. We we are like obsessed with gardening and the pandemic city. Right? It's like we talked about it all the time for hours. You realize like there's so much things I didn't even realize you could do like if you have a window or a fire escape, you can grow so much and that's still ads and you're giving back to you.
