Scientists at the University of Cambridge in England have identified genes in female fruit flies capable of independent reproduction. That means that they're able to reproduce without a male partner. And yes, that's technically a virgin birth. Scientists have manipulated these genes and induced virgin births in the species. The research involved over 220,000 virgin fruit flies took six years to complete and the findings were published in the journal Current Biology.
