Some Networks Protect Their Stars, When It's Worth It

Comedian Samantha Bee may not lose her job after vulgar comments about Ivanka Trump, because it may be too costly for her network, TBS, to lose her.

Some observers, including Trump's father, the President of the United States, said Bee should lose her TV gig the way Roseanne Bar did when ABC canceled her show for Barr's racist tweet about a former Obama aide.

In a discussion on her comedy show about the Trump Administration's treatment of immigrants, Bee referred to Ivanka Trump as a "feckless c***." The remark drew criticism from the White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who said the comment was "vile and vicious." President Trump called for Bee to be fired.

It's the latest example of television stars making outrageous comments online, and networks trying to manage the blow-back, said Jeremy Barr, a media and politics reporter at the Hollywood Reporter.

"Networks really want to win and Sam Bee is one of TBS' stars in the same way that Ingrahm was one of Fox News' stars and Bill O'Reilly was one of Fox News' stars," Barr said in an interview Friday with Cheddar. "TV networks always want to protect the big ratings stars."

Unlike TBS, however, Fox News did not apologize for comments Laura Ingraham criticized some of the survivors of the Parkland school shooting who spoke out for gun control after 17 of their classmates were killed in February. Fox said in a statement at the time, "We cannot and will not allow voices to be censored by agenda-driven intimidation efforts."

After Bee's comments about Ivanka Trump, TBS said in a statement “Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologizing for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night. Those words should not have been aired. It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”

ABC also apologized after Barr's racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a former aide to President Obama, and within 12 hours had canceled Barr's hit show. The decision may cost ABC more than $60 million in ad revenue, based on one estimate, but it could have cost more in a potential boycott had ABC decided to keep Barr on the air.

Already, Autotrader and State Farm Insurance have pulled ads from "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee."
