Stretching Your Dollar: How to Save on Video Games

Well, it's national video games Day. And so in honor of one of America's favorite pastime, we're talking about all the different ways that you can stretch your dollar when gaming. So for tips on scoring deals and saving money on your favorite games, I'm joined by John Biggs, editor of NASA News and host of the Keep Going Podcast. Thank you so much for joining and let's dive right in. So are there any popular games that you can actually play for free? I mean, almost all the games that you uh that you think about like Fortnite Overwatch, all these big games they're definitely free to play. Um the they get you with the downloadable content, the DLC, right? And uh but if you just want to play a game and try it out, the vast majority of games on I Os and Android are available in that same way, uh they only get you once you need to expand a little bit or uh or I don't know, get some extra coins for your candy crush addiction, that kind of thing. Uh Let's talk more about some of those add-on charges. John, what's the price range? And what's an example of some that people might need to pay up for? Well, let's say like minecraft, that's pretty popular with the kids. Uh, my kids in particular, uh that's about 7 99 a month to get a higher end access to Minecraft, to be able to run servers to actually add friends to your, uh, to your Minecraft server. Um That's a big, that's a big popular game. Um, all this DLC, this sort of nickel and diming uh associated with downloadable content is the definitely the thing that you gotta watch out for, especially if you're a parent, especially if you're a, even if you're an avid gamer, maybe you won't even notice. Uh they start, they add a subscription to you that rarely happens these days, but it's still possible. Um I mean, sometimes you just want like an extra for your character and you want to pay nine bucks for it and that's about how much that stuff costs these days. I'm seeing some images of some very serious gamers on the screen right now. John, a lot of these big platforms, Xbox and playstation, for example, they do offer subscription packages. Are they worth the monthly fee to consumers? Uh I asked around, I asked uh some folks who play Playstation and play Xbox, play uh PC games, I think game pass is probably your best bet. Uh That's only on the Xbox that gives you almost a limited access to a huge library of tickets, uh, even brand new games. Uh, for example, Star Field just came out, uh, a pretty big game. It's gonna be super popular. It costs about 59 $69 to purchase. Uh, right. Uh, and you still have to update those upgrades in DLC, uh, with the game pass, it's free. Uh, so that saves you just about 60 bucks right out of the gate. Uh, game pass has plenty of those games. There's also streaming services that you can play, uh, on almost all the platforms. Uh, they allow you to just kind of like try the game. You don't have to download it, you don't have to install anything. But again, it costs a little bit of money in, in many cases, it's, it's between the, I don't know, $2030 a month, actually. All right, good to know. What about video game bundles? Do they give you more bang for your buck? I think. So, if you're a really avid gamer and you want to try out all sorts of games, indie games, older games, even some newer games, uh, you can try Humble Bundle. That's one of the big, uh, that's one of the big big bundles that, uh pop up. Occasionally. Those, those, uh, services offer multiple games that may be a little bit older, that may not be as popular anymore, uh, or may have had a massive popularity a couple months ago. And, uh, um, you can kind of like give them a try. I really like those a lot, a lot of those bundles also uh basically a with every purchase. Uh so you can get all that, you can get all that stuff uh fairly and expensively. Ok, great. So our full screen says Humble Bundle, you reference that fanatical Indie Gala Epic bundle as well. Is there any trade off and quality that comes with these video game bundles? Not necessarily, I mean, it's uh bits or bits, right? So uh you're the bundle is basically, I think we're losing the audio there on John. The connection got a little wonky toward the end, but it is National Gaming Day, as we mentioned.
