We all know how important it is to wear sunscreen. Well, it turns out there's a whole lot more to good skin care. I had the opportunity to walk and talk recently with Jamie Oan and the founder of Beauty Bio to talk about everything from skin care tips to mentorship and what it's like juggling a company and a family. Take a look. Thank you so much for joining us. My joy. I'm happy to be here. We are at the famed South Street Seaport. You came from Dallas for this. We appreciate it. I love talking beauty. Tell me about beauty. Bio. Beauty bio has been my life's work to date combining beauty and bioscience together. I grew up in the industry. My dad's an amazing physician chemist and growing up spending lots of time in our family's lab. You start to see that in beauty. Unfortunately, there's a lot of dream in the bottle promises. So I really started first as an educator and an advocate just to help people that I love in my community know what you should and shouldn't be doing with your skin and skin health. You know, this better than I do. This is such a competitive space. How does beauty bio stand out? There was such a need such a gap in the market with a basic knowledge and be true. Third party tested clinical efficacy that people can count on. I thought to myself, you know what we as women, we will talk. If something exceeds our expectations, we will talk about and if it does, we will and we have become one of the fastest growing skin care brands in North America, which is exciting and pinch me moment to be at here in London and in Australia and Sephora and here and it's really our community, our community and our team. You know, there's so many women that are watching and men that are so inspired by you. You spoke about the pinch me moment. What advice would you give to them? Oh my gosh. I help, I try to carve out time to help mentor young entrepreneurs that are just starting out. And there's so much that probably good that I didn't know because I don't know if I would have kept going. But at the end of the day structuring a vision beginning with the end in mind, knowing that you're going to constantly have to pivot to survive, to grow and to really thrive and having that mindset, not thinking of things as problems looking at them as puzzles. I started out modeling when I was 17, 18 years old. It didn't save my money. Started beauty bio and self funded until a few years ago. So you saved your modeling money and started beauty buyer. I know you believe in this product that much. 100%. Absolutely. And you look back in your past, feels really disconnected and then it comes together at some point. You go, ok, I get it. Now, the beauty industry really has set up almost an impossible ideal for men and women. Have you felt that? And how do you deal with it when you are pitching your products to the consumer? Yeah, it's a great question. And I think transparency is key. Transparency is key and then empowering with knowledge. And as cliche as that sounds, if you can help people understand, let's be realistic about your expectations for results. And my goal is to democratize access. So we created and invented a micro needling tool, the category micro needling almost 15 years ago. My father pioneered and patented and we said, wait a second, you only pay 300 bucks to go do this 0.3 millimeter micro needling. You can do this at home safely. Do you think the beauty industry focuses more on the actual beauty and health? Interesting and 100%. Yes, 100%. The conversation is changing and I'm grateful to be part of that. And I think it's important as consumers ourselves to think about it that way. I mean, you pause and you think, do you take a multi vitamin every day, every day, every day. Right. You don't think twice about it. Do you go to the gym or have some several times a week? But if you don't. Right. So why do we feel that skin care is an indulgence? I'm a big believer in think of vitamins for your skin, right? Vitamin C during the day. Vitamin A retinol at night. There are a few basic things that you can be doing, feeding your skin. And that's why clean beauty is important because you are what your skin needs. And when you have those key ingredients that you're feeding your skin, it totally changes the conversation back to skin health, which I think is really, really critical. We have to talk about you not being the only CEO in your family. What's it like being in a power couple? Just the whole pilot crazy. No. You know, it's been definitely didn't plan the timing. My husband is the same job CEO and founder of his life insurance company and they just, it's been nuts having two entrepreneurs, our poor kids, lots of future therapy. I don't know. We're just really deliberate with our calendar and our time shared calendars and really honoring our time has been I think the key to making it work and I block time in my calendar to show it to you that you know, time with my kids is literally honored like as if it were a board meeting, right? You have to be so deliberate and intentional. Have you started skincare with your kids or talking to? Yeah, that's ok. So, I was with one of our partners and they started chatting about Jenna and Jena is like your 10, 11, 12, 13 year olds and they are massive cohort of consumer that is very opinionated, very opinionated. Yeah, I'm truly, if you walk into their bathrooms, anything that is trainning on Tik Tok even, they don't even use it yet. My 10 year old is not wearing makeup but she has it all wants it all out and that's where she wants to spend her little allowance money. It's fun. And if it brings you joy, then I say I'm for it.
