The Best Holiday Movies to Watch... And to Skip

But you know what else we're thankful for guys, all the amazing holiday movies. So here to help us decide what to watch this season is our friend Jacqueline Coley Awards editor over at rotten tomatoes, Jacqueline, thank you so much for being here. So, rotten tomatoes of course. So rotten tomatoes has created a holiday hub which features list like the best and the worst christmas movies of all time. We like to start with the good here. What are some of the movies featured on your best christmas movies of all time list that people should check out this holiday season? Yeah, it's really an incredible list because it very much centers in on christmas movies and so you will absolutely see things like Edward scissorhands. You will see new movies like jingle jangle, which I absolutely love. This was a netflix movie from a few years ago. We also have the classics like Miracle on 34th Street Nightmare before christmas and of course it's A Wonderful Life. But there's a ton on this list. Do not feel like it just has to be the quote unquote classics. You'll even find a favorite New Year's Eve movie of mine on there. The apartment. So definitely got some that we need to see. But rotten tomatoes also has a worse christmas list. Ok, what are some of the holiday movies that people should just go ahead and avoid? I mean we have a series of rotten tomatoes called rotten movies we love. So, although this is like the movies on the worst side of things. That does not mean we should a joy them. It just maybe means that maybe they're so bad, they're good or maybe their cult classics like mixed nuts or that the hall surviving christmas even though it's a rotten movie. People love love, love that movie and I'm not gonna in any way come against the folks that are like, you know, christmas with the kranks is my favorite. But you know, even a movie like jingle all the way is also rotten. But tell me why people don't just love that. That is, that is very good by the way. One of the movies probably getting out of that list is Lindsay Lohan's new necklace movie I made 15, 20 minutes. I am all for the Lohan isn't, that is happening right now. But the movie so far, by the way, rotten tomatoes. Holiday hub also includes a list of 30 modern christmas classics to add to your holiday movie list. So what are some of the newer holiday themed movies that you would recommend here? I mean a ton of the ones that are on there, but also from a few years ago. I know everyone loves the classic Doctor Dr Seuss grinch. But we also have the new animated version. We also have the man who invented christmas Elf is on that list. I already mentioned jingle jangle. We also have claws. Happiest season, which is absolutely an incredible and funny movie that premiered on hulu is also on there. But yeah, I mean again, there's still new movies that I love that are part of this new christmas lore and even more I would say not say right, modern movies, but something like the holiday that to me is a modern movie classic I feel like I love and rotten tomatoes 2022 holiday movie calendar also features movies being released in theaters throughout the holiday season. Jacqueline what are some holiday or family friendly movies coming out throughout the rest of 2022 that we should be excited for? Absolutely. Well there are a few, I would say christmas entries that are, that are part of that list. I would even say Spirited with Will Farrow and Ryan Reynolds would fall in that group and that is already streaming. But there's a ton of also just great movies for the family like the fable mints which will be still be in theaters. There's also avatar way of the water that is coming out. But another one that I am really excited about is Whitney Houston's. I wanna dance with somebody that is also going to be the small season And if you are looking for that quote unquote christmas movie, Violet Night starring David Harbor is a great one. Although maybe not so much for the family. It's gonna be bad santa in a good way, definitely not for the family. I agree with that. All right. So during the holiday season, it's also pretty common for studios to release movies that they hope to be considered for the Oscars and other awards. So what are some of the movies featured on rotten tomatoes? 2022 holiday movie calendar that could potentially be celebrated on Hollywood? Yes, this is definitely. I've already mentioned the fable meant it is a family film, but it's also very much the crown jewel right now in the Oscar conversation avatar, the Way of Water is another one that has been long awaited. But a lot of folks are pinpointing towards that one to say this absolutely could be a holiday film that folks get behind, but there's also a ton of other films that are still going to be in theaters like Black Panther Strange World. These are all films that I think folks are going to be talk talking about come Oscar time, whether it be an individual categories like best animated feature or for best picture with films like avatar, Elvis Bemelmans and Black Panther Wakanda forever. Alright, Jacqueline, let's get to the sort of the big topic here. There's been a lot of debate throughout the years about what really qualifies as a christmas movie. Some believe movies like Home Alone and Die Hard. Their christmas movies, others disagree. So what side of the argument do you land on is a movie like Die Hard? A christmas movie? I think a movie resides in christmas if the people find it to be a christmas movie and there are elements to a christmas movie, the setting whether or not it's about being with your family that are undeniably a part of Die Hard. So I'm of the camp that Die Hard is a christmas movie. It is a christmas movie as far as our list is also concerned, even though it was a debate among them rotten tomatoes offices as well. But another movie that I consider a christmas movie that not a lot of people consider it a quote unquote christmas movie is a movie like tangerine like that is absolutely to be a christmas movie that Sean baker's film from a few years ago and it is the story of a couple of trans workers on christmas eve trying to find her man and that is christmas to me, you cannot tell me that santa does not have to be in the movie for it to qualify and there is santa in that movie by the way, same Diehard, you got all the christmas decorations and christmas songs throughout Gremlins is a christmas movie.
