The Music Industry's Obsession with Sampling

That's right. And despite all the new music, you may have noticed a lot of it sounds kind of familiar. That's because many of your favorite artists are sampling popular songs and it's basically a recipe for success. If you aren't familiar, sampling is the act of reusing a portion of an already existing song in a different recording and applying the rhythm melody vocals or other aspect of that music. And over the last few years, samples have been a steady factor in billboard hits. According to a report from track, lib 54% of all new albums featured on the 2021 billboard top 25 charts contains samples and guess what that number is expected to rise this year. For instance, take Lizzo on our new album special. At least five songs contain samples from other artists including Lauryn Hill, the Beastie Boys and Kool in the Gang. And even the closing track is called Coldplay and that samples the band Coldplay's breakthrough song. Yellow Got all that listen here. Okay, My Love Is You Now. In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music One, Lizzo explained her emotional connection to Yellow. She said she and a companion once sang the song while Looking Up at the Stars. She even thanked Coldplay lead singer Chris martin for giving her his blessing to use the song. Listen here, if someone had told me 22 years ago, you know one day Lizzo is going to make out to this song Okay, I feel like I feel like Yellow was written for an entirely different purpose, but it's kind of become a hook up song. Absolutely baby making music, maybe Um I am living for that exchange and believe it or not, yellow is as mentioned, 22 years old. Do you feel old? But songs don't even have to be around for that long baker to get the sample treatment. Jack Harlow crafted his hit song first class with the help of Fergie's 2007 Hit single, glamorous. Check it out, I'm gonna throw up the sex and I can put you in Okay, I don't think the math is math thing because 2007, that was like 15 years ago, but also somehow, yesterday. Anyway, in an interview, Harlow explained he grew up loving Fergie and being inspired by the singer. He also revealed he's been wanting to sample the artist for a while and it finally came together. First class debuted at number one on the US billboard hot 100 becoming Harlow second song and first solo track to top the charts and even royalty samples. It's not just these other artists, Queen B herself got in on the decades long act for her latest single, Break My Soul. Listen here, you won't break, you won't break. And Asia, if you're a fan of those house beats like me, you'll definitely recognize that one. 100%. The track features the iconic house song Show Me Love of course by Robin S the nineties House Legend said on Good Morning Britain, she was thrilled. Beyonce sampled her work, new Orleans bounce legend, Big Freedia also appears on the song in the form of a sample from her 2014 track explode. This isn't the first time Queen bee has turned to the Queen Diva who told us having the opportunity to work with Beyonce again has been amazing. I'm just very honored to be a part of, you know, another great moment um something so iconic, ever grateful to Beyonce in her camp for reaching out to my, to me in my camp. Um you know, it's just a great moment for um the music game right now, you know, her blessing us with her presence once again and giving us something that we can dance to and and lay our hair down and explode. Sampling has been used in music for decades and when it's done right, it's led to the creation of countless hit songs. The ethics of sampling and fair use though has been debated for years though, probably for as long as technology has been involved in the art of making music. But as we continue to see artists have success sampling old hits. The act is on its way to becoming a staple in the industry. I mean if you listen to pop radio now, almost every song from Lotto to so many others. I mean Lotto sampling Mariah Carey, there's another Lotto song where she's sampling Beyonce's Crazy in love. I mean in many ways you think and I read this in in Bloomberg and and I thought it was spot on new songs are down in terms of the streams, old songs are up in terms of streams were loving listening to old songs right now. So if you're a new artist trying to make a new song, why not pull from nostalgia and that's going to get people back into some of your music. I love that you mentioned Lotto big Energy because you and I love that song but also I didn't realize it's sampled Mariah, it's a sample from Mariah but Mariah genius. So it's like a sample sample and I also, I would say like we talk about Kanye West a lot on this show, I would say he's like the king of the modern sample and it really from then on, I feel like so many artists have been able to pay homage to the celebrities and the artists that they really love within music. But also Tiktok has led to a resurgence of a lot of these old songs and an appreciation that maybe one generation wouldn't have listened to and also just a ton of excitement around samples. So it'll be exciting to see where it goes from here, I think. Yeah, because they're gonna be sampling songs maybe from this show in, you know.
