Kahlil Greene, Yale University’s first-ever Black student body president, joined Cheddar to talk about a series he created that explains the origins of trends from Black creators that appear on social media but go viral and are monetized by others. He said the idea for highlighting cultural appropriation was sparked after ‘The Tonight Show’ invited TikToker Addison Rae to perform dances she didn’t credit to the originators and a Saturday Night Live sketch utilized specific Black slang to describe Gen Z culture in general. The TikTok platform itself has come under fire for elevating white creators over their Black counterparts as well as for a recent issue where its algorithm targeted the word "Black" in a user's bio. Greene also talked about what Yale and other elite Ivy League institutions can do to better support students from underrepresented communities.
