Tips for Staying Ahead of Cyberwarfare

Cheddar news was on the ground in Austin at south by Southwest and caught up with Pale Thacker, the advanced manufacturing and mobility cybersecurity lead at Ey who broke down the kinds of new attacks that we're seeing now now more so than ever, we're seeing really sophisticated, persistent and disruptive attacks. And this is made even more complicated by the ecosystems that we live in, such as the connected products, the smart meters, the IOT devices and then IOT devices that are now being connected into the internet. What this does is it increases not only the attacks surface but the time for which these devices are made available for Attackers. One example that comes to mind is the colonial pipeline example where we had the operation shut down for five days and primarily because Attackers got access to the systems days in advance before the sisters were actually brought down. So what are some solutions out there to battle these kinds of attacks. While pale explains that data and supply chain visibility is key. So visibility is really foundational to a comprehensive cyber defense program. We like to think about visibility across the ecosystem, not just within the company and the perimeter, knowing our own assets, knowing our own vulnerabilities, but really understanding our suppliers, what their vulnerabilities could be, what data exchanges we have, what dependencies we have. And then that visibility helps us understand what should be our response parameters. What should be a resiliency strategy and how can organizations stay ahead of cyber warfare. Here's the wise advice. So I like to think about types of security as an enabler to our businesses, to their business operations, to the customer and really the revenue. I like to think about a threefold. What are the insights we can provide what transformations we can enable and then can we help you operate your system? So in would be things like the regulatory information available out there, whether it's doing tabletop exercises for resiliency operations are when we're thinking about running processes, running a sock for you and the transformation could be really anything okay.
