A new study from Oxfam analyzed the investments of 100 and 25 of the wealthiest people on earth to find out just how large their carbon footprints are. Researchers found these billionaires on average, our image Three million tons of carbon every year. That's more than 100 million times the amount for the bottom 90% of humanity and the equivalent of the entire country of France, which by the way, has a population of 67 million people. It's not just their lavish lifestyles with private jets and yachts and multiple cars that are having an outsized impact on the environment. Unlike ordinary people, a majority of billionaires emissions come from their investments. The study found 14% of those investments are in polluting industries like fossil fuels and materials like cement. One only person in the sample group had a stake in a renewable energy company. Oxfam is now calling on world leaders to address this issue at the cop 27 climate summit that's going on in Egypt right now saying billionaires need to be held accountable for their role in driving the climate crisis with their stake in the world's largest and most powerful companies, the ultra rich have the power to influence the way these corporations act. The report recommends government imposed a heavy tax on investments made in polluting industries, which could then be used to fund climate related efforts around the world.
