On the Scene: Trying Out The Standard's 1960s-Inspired Roller Rink

And hello. Hello everyone. Welcome back. I'm Baker Pacho and I'm in a thank you so much for joining us. Our good pal Shan Elmeer visited a free outdoor roller rink that's throwing it back to the 19 sixties right here in New York. Take a look today. I'm getting around on eight wheels because I am skating at the Standard Hotel on the lower west side of Manhattan. Check these out. Oh my gosh, we're skating in the city. This is so weird that you would see that. But page here is a director of guest experiences. So you gotta tell us why did you guys decide to put a skating rink here? The hotel, I think with everything we do with Standard, the question is not why, but it's why not. Yeah. So we wanted to have a place where you could roll around, let loose, totally free of judgment and just be yourself here uh in the lower Manhattan. Well, a lot of people are out here using the skating rink already. So what type of people use this? I think it's for everyone. I saw someone yesterday come through in their own skates with their headphones. And they were just letting loose. So I think it's something for everybody here and there is an advantage to bringing your own skates. Right. Absolutely. So, we have rentals starting in our skate shack at $10. But, you know, for the skater who wants to level up, we also have a partnership with Brooklyn and Portland based skate shop called Five Stride. So you can head over to the skate shack and pick up some skates, maybe something new T shirts, tube socks, you know, a ball. And this is not the first experience that you guys have put out here. What are some of the other things you've done instead of a skating rink? So we did a bumper car arena a couple months ago. That was pretty awesome. We've also had lots of art installations and yeah, so this is always seasonal. It changes. It's something exciting and any time you come to the Meat packing district, you can always pop by the standard. Find out what's happening in the plaza. Do you think that this helps bring people to hotel, want to stay here or eat here because they have this experience as well? Yeah. You know, that's always a plus. We love to have new guests and returning guests, but it's really more about the community and the neighborhood, bringing people together and something unexpected and exciting. Yeah. Ok. So before we get our on more, what tips would you provide to people here? That want to come out here and skate. Well, I would say someone like me to help you across the road. I would say a good friend who knows how to skate. I would say identify all the, I would also say to, uh, you know, maybe plan to, uh, leave the outside world outside the rink and kind of let loose, maybe use it as a little bit of therapy in this crazy city. I like that. We all need a little therapy. Yes, we do. All right. When we come back, we're gonna learn more about the skating rink and why she's dressing this groovy outfit. It has something to do with the theme that they have and maybe we'll even taste some of the snacks that they have on hand here too.
