Jennifer Gootman, Vice President of Social Consciousness and Innovation at West Elm, discusses the company's partnership with Fair Trade USA. Right now, 20% of the company's product offerings are Fair Trade and by 2020, the goal is to double that number to 40%. Fair Trade requires West Elm to invest directly in the people producing its goods. By 2020, the company has pledged $3 million in premiums to the local communities that build its Fair Trade Products. Gootman notes that this investment is one of West Elm's long-term visions for the company. Gootman discusses the long 8-month to 2-year process that it takes to get a manufacturing facility certified as Fair Trade. So far, the company has plants in India, Nepal, Pakistan, and now a certified furniture factory in Vietnam. The Vietnam facility is where West Elm's signature mid-century collection is manufactured.
