Back in 1949 businessman, Frank McNamara was having dinner when he realized he had forgotten his wallet. He asked the owner if he could sign for the meal and pay later. While some say the legendary dinner never happened, everyone agrees McNamara founded the Diners Club, the first multi-purpose charge card, in 1950. He then sold memberships to friends and acquaintances who paid $3 for the 'sign now and pay later' system at participating restaurants and hotels.
