Mattel shares have soared since reports indicated that rival Hasbro was making a takeover approach. The deal would unite the two largest U.S. toymakers, but not everyone is buying into the speculation. Lutz Muller, Author at Seeking Alpha, joined us to break down the likelihood of a deal going through. Muller is not bullish on the merger. He says the deal is unlikely to happen because the only group rooting for it is Hasbro management. The biggest issue, according to Muller, is that the European Union probably will not look kindly on the merger for competitive reasons. Opposition from Disney may be another hurdle for the acquisition. Hasbro is Disney's main licensee for the movie brands, and Disney is concerned about losing leverage over the toymaker, says Muller. If Hasbro does a deal, he thinks Disney would not renew licenses.
