ANOTHER WILD, WILD RIDE

The Dow Industrials traded in a range of more than 1,000 points yet again on Friday, eventually closing up almost 1.4 percent. Within the Cheddar 50, Nvidia posted the biggest gain, rising about 6.7 percent after reported better-than-expected earnings for its latest quarter. The chipmaker saw strong results from its gaming unit and rising demand from cryptocurrency miners. But the CFO warned it's going to focus on its core business, as fluctuations in Bitcoin and other digital assets make that market too volatile. Still, even with Friday's gains, major U.S. markets were down for a second straight week -- the S&P 500 has lost almost 9 percent from its all-time highs.

AMAZON STUDIOS GETS A NEW CHIEF

NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke will take over the tech giant's film and TV unit, and she's got a lot on her plate right off the bat. The studio, whose former head Roy Price resigned in October amid sexual harassment allegations, is also trying to figure out what to do about its multi-movie contract with Woody Allen, who's faced accusations of his own. On top of that, the production house has been criticized by filmmakers who say it's interfered with their creative process. And while original programming like "Transparent" and "Manchester by the Sea" have garnered critical acclaim, the overall content hasn't seen the broad success of competing offerings from Netflix. Amazon is committed to the studio though -- Salke will oversee a budget of about $4.5 billion annually.

But this isn't the "thumbs down" button that so many have clamored for -- it won't be available for overall posts, and users won't see any icon or get a count on how many people have voted against the comment. It's also only being rolled out to a small fraction of users on the company's Android app. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has set a goal to "fix" his company this year, saying he wants to make it a more meaningful experience.
