Amanda Johnson and Kristen Miller wanted to fill a major gap they saw in the beauty industry. The pair could not find any nude lipsticks that matched their skin tones. So the two Harvard Business School grads created Mented, a beauty line for women of color. Mented sells nude lipsticks and glosses for women of color that matches the pigments in their skin.Their company has grown by word of mouth and organic Instagram posts. The pair are co-CEOs and give advice on how to operate as such. They said the key is to pick someone you can trust in any situation. And it seems like they are doing something right, because the pair are the 15th and 16th black female entrepreneurs to raise $1M in VC funding. In the future, they are hoping to expand out to other beauty products. But for now, their lipsticks and glosses are flying off the shelf.
