Dole's Touching Moment: In a moving tribute at the Capitol, 95-year-old former senator Bob Dole was helped out of his wheelchair to salute the casket of his fellow WWII vet. Read more here.
Khashoggi: After a briefing with the C.I.A., a bipartisan group of senators say they believe the crown prince of Saudi Arabia ordered the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Sen. Lindsey Graham says “there’s not a smoking gun, there’s a smoking saw” and likened Mohammed bin Salman to a “wrecking ball.” Read more here.
Flynn Memo: The special counsel’s office released a heavily redacted memo recommending that Michael Flynn, President Trump’s first national security adviser, should receive little to no prison time because of his “substantial assistance” in the Russia investigation. Flynn had been charged with lying to the feds. Read more here.
Missing Tourist: The body of a Miami woman who disappeared while vacationing in Costa Rica was positively identified by her family. Carla Stefaniak, 36 was found partially buried near the Airbnb she was staying in near San Jose. Authorities arrested a Nicaraguan man who was working as a security guard on the property. Markets Tank: The stock market tanked once again as investors got spooked about President Trump’s conflicting statements on the trade war with China. Trump referred to himself as the “tariff man” days after signaling a truce in the escalating conflict. The Dow closed down 799 points, its fourth-biggest point drop in history. Read more here.
Facial Recognition: The Secret Service has been testing a facial recognition system outside the White House. Beginning November 19, cameras have been capturing images of people, then attempting to match them to “people of interest,” who ー for now ー are Secret Service employees involved in the test. Ohio State: Ohio State Buckeye coach Urban Meyer is retiring from college football ー again. Meyer is a three-time national champion, who retired once before, eight years ago, when he was coach of Florida. Meyer, 54, says he’s throwing in the towel because of health issues. The Rose Bowl will be his last game. Read more here.
Oscar Host: Kevin Hart announced he will host the Oscars, ending speculation over who would preside over the 91st year of the award show. Hart revealed the news in an Instagram post, saying “I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time.” The Oscars air Feb. 24. Read more here.
Kanye Called Out: At the premiere of The Cher Show on Broadway, Kanye West was on his phone during the production, prompting the actor playing Sonny Bono to tweet at Kanye: “If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here." West later apologized. His wife Kim Kardashian says he had his phone out because he was taking notes. Read more here.
- White Reindeer: A Norwegian photographer captured a stunning image of a rare white reindeer. Mads Nordsveen was hiking with friends in the north part of the country when they spotted the reindeer that he says “almost disappeared into the snow.” See the photos here.
