In a series of tweets Wednesday, President Trump said the U.S. will not allow transgender individuals to serve in the military. We spoke with OZY's Nick Fouriezos and Washington Examiner's Melissa Quinn about the apparent new policy. Fouriezos recalls Trump's promise at the Republican National Convention to support members of the LGBT community. In fact, Trump's tweets mark a significant departure from his 2016 platform, when he ran as one of the most pro-LGBT Republican candidates in recent history. Quinn notes that the Pentagon's press team was unaware that Trump would communicate this decision today, according to CNN. Quinn also anticipates that the new policy will receive major blowback from Congressional Democrats due to the wording of the tweet, which states that transgender individuals won't be able to serve in any capacity.
