And a rare and mysterious fungus is rapidly spreading across the U S. This deadly fungus is spread through close contact. Now, federal researchers say the pressure is on to find new treatments for severe fungal disease. The fungus is called candida oris. It was discovered about 15 years ago in Japan CDC. Data shows in 2016, it only infected 53 people here in the U S last year, it infected 2377. It's been documented in most us states by now and in more than 40 countries, this fungus has a mortality rate of up to 60% and is really risky for older people and people with immune weaknesses.
